Show UU IS OGDEN IN LEAGUE WITH CRIMINALS 1 Ogdenites, lately In Salt Lake, re-port re-port a growing sentiment that juries in Ogden are too lenient In their treatment of criminals and a federal official Is quoted as saying that, ho intends to investigate conditions in this city as bearing on this subject. We do not know why this impression impres-sion should prevail In the capital, That city was at one time, not remote, re-mote, in the hands of the most corrupt cor-rupt gang of sure-thing men, aided by the polico, known to any place on the continent, and wherever, throughout through-out the state, a defense of the criminal crim-inal element was necessary, the defenders de-fenders came out of Salt Lake. A resident of Ogden, who asked one of the traducers of this city for a bill of particulars, was Informed among other things, that the state health authorities were never ablo to secure a prosecution of violators of the health laws; that dairies selling sell-ing Impure milk, groceries and butcher butch-er shops disposing of injurious food J products and creameries turning out j short weight butter invariably escaped, es-caped, although a score of complaints had been entered. This all proves nothing as to the degree of respect for law in Ogden, and only goes to the point of isolated failures In prosecution. The health officers of the state, we know, became be-came disgusted at one time because a butcher, chargod with using freez-Ine, freez-Ine, escaped punishment, but the fault was not with court or Jury. Proof was furnished that the preservative preserv-ative was employed, but there was no evidenco introduced to show that the foreign substance was injurious, and the case fell (Iat owing to that very grave oversight on the part of the state chemist and those conducting conduct-ing the prosecution, for all of which tho people of Ogden could not be held blamable. More offenders have been sent to the state prison from Ogden than from any other city in the state. There may be incompetency in certain directions', but that condition Is present In Salt Lake as well as in Ogden, and Is due to tho shortcomings short-comings of Individuals and .not to any low moral tone in community affairs. Whenever a criminal escapes justice jus-tice in Ogden, the travesty on law and order unorringly can be charged to tho weakness In tho marshaling of facts and the presentation of argument. argu-ment. The people of Ogden as a whole are alert in tho upholding of orderly society and are earnestly in tavor of bringing tho Iahmaolite, whose' hand is against every man, to condign punishment, and to reflect on them when individuals fail In their full duty In this particular Is a libel most unjustifiable. |
