Show oo LECTURE GIVEN BY JJ. WILLIS Under tbe auspices of the Chautau qua Reading Circle, a lecture was giv en by J. G. Willis, in the council chamber of the City hall laat night. The lecture was on the subject of Greece and the Greeks and waB heard by a large number of people, includ ing the members of the Circle. The subject was handled by Mr. Mills in a very interesUng manner, as he received his information at first hand, having spent several weeks in a visit to Greece during which he studied the country from every point of view. He presented in detail during his address the manner of government of the people of the pad and present, the difference in the methods of education edu-cation and the standard of living. Especially Es-pecially interesting was his reference to the ancient Greek architecture, sculpture and painting, which he said was incomparably more beautiful and artistic than that of the present day. Mr. Willis' talk was appreciated by the members of the Chautauqua Circle, Cir-cle, as it aided them in their study of Greece, which has occupied their time during the present season. It is believed also that the fact of its being given to the public aB well, will interest more people in the work of the Circle and add members, One hundred local Greeks were pres ent at the lecture and were highly pleased. The next lecture will be given by Prof. Byron Cummings of the Uiil verslty of Utah, who is an authority on Greek art. Prof. Cumming s lec turo will be illustrated with stereop ticon views. |
