Show uu ' GOVERNMENT FARM NEAR ! OGDEN. J Weber county Is caring for an indigent in-digent transient who has been shifted from one county to another until he states. The unfortunate was originally origi-nally a miner in Wluncmuccn, Nov. He wandered away and became a charge on Utah county, this state. From Provo he was shipped to Salt Lake. The capital unloaded him on to Ogden. From hero he was sent to Evanston. Then he was thrown back on the hands of the Weber county commissioners, to be by them catapulted cata-pulted into Nevada. When he arrived ar-rived at Elko, he was given transpor-, transpor-, tation back to Ogden, and here he is once more, a pauper with an incurable incur-able disease as an unwelcome guest. This brings up that old question as to what to do with the wanderlns hordes of vagabonds who come and go. The Standard repeatedly has sug gested that the federal government should take hold of this problem and has pointed out the good that might be accomplished if a government farm were established near Ogden, where, in an experimental way, the caring for the vagrant might be undertaken. un-dertaken. We believe a farm of that kind could be made self-sustaining' while offering to the wayfarers an opportunity opportu-nity to get out of the slough of despond long enough to become useful use-ful members of society. A farm of that description at least would relieve re-lieve counties and municipalities along the main lines of travel from an unequal share In the expense of meeting the tramp evils. The Standard has taken steps to have a bill presented to congress providing for a government farm to be established near this city, having for its object the caring for tho great army of penniless men who drift through Ogden every year. |
