Show I THE MURDERERS OF ROSENTHAL Herman Rosenthal was a gambler f in Ogden a few years ago. From here he wont to New York and became the ' owner of a gambling house which for ( a lime received police protection un der Lieutenant Becker. He had a falling out with Becker ami (he quarrel quar-rel resulted in the police lieutenant ordering "Gyp the Bjood." "Lefty Louie," "Dago Frank," "Whltey Jack" 'I and other members of a gang; of gun-' gun-' men, who operated with police con- 1 ni vanco, to kill Rosenthal. The gamb ler was called to a hotel by tolephono I and in front of the place was shot to death. Mrs. Rosenthal then disclosed sufficient information as to the secret .1 cperations of the police to stir public j sentiment and the publicity that fol-L fol-L lowed caused an investigation which proved that New York City's police i ;or-co--was -honeycombed with cor-, ruption aiid that professional murderers murder-ers were in league with the officers of tbc, law. Then came Becker's -ar-; rest and that of the gunmen and con- Ij e slons'.worc obtained from some of J the "principals in the tragedy. Powerful influences interceded for Becker' and just prior to the time when lie was- to have oeen executed, I the higher court ordered a retrial. ' Now "Gyj) the Blood' "Lefty Louie" ' apd thoircomrades in orime are fac-. fac-. lug Iho 'death 'chair an u 'they are ap j pealing to the governor of New York i tu aave them from execution, licckor well deserved death, and ( likewise the gunmen, but, if there must be a miscarriage of justice, the I public would prefer to eec Becker made to atone for the crime, than 1 that the arch conspirator should go freo and his miserable tools sufrcr electrocution. The death penalty perhaps 6erves no good purpose, yet now and then a terrible example may be necessary to Impress on men like Becker, entrusted- with high responsibility, the ; nature of tbeir offending when they deliberately set about to make murder mur-der yield them revenue, while breaking break-ing down all the safeguards of orderly I society. |
