Show FRENCH RELEASED BY THE COURTS Los Angeles, Cal., April 3. C W. French, promoter, who was arrested on a charge of having given a worthless worth-less draft to the Hotel Ptah of Salt Lake City in payment for entertainment entertain-ment for a number of Los Angeles capitalists, was released today by Judge Craig, who, in goving his decision, de-cision, said: "I can find no reason for holding this man in custody. Thero Is no evidence of a public offense having been committed and sufficient facts are not stated to constitute or even allege a crime. There Is no evidence hero that the draft was ever present-d present-d to tho person on whom it was drawn for payment." Kemper J. Camnbell. attnrnfiv for temper J. Campbell, attorney for French, declared that French's arrest was caused by foreign capitalists who tried to get him out of the way. French has a damage suit pending in the federal courts against G. O. Relf of Salt Lake, the complaining witness against him, and several others. Salt Lake, April 4. According to County Attorney I. B. Willey, no word of the action of the California court had reached him up to a late hour last night. In the absence of direct advice on the decision. Mr. Willey said that he could not make a statement state-ment in reference to future action on the case. "I am surprised," said G. O. Relf, manager of the Hotel Utah, when told of the decision. "Of course, I do not mean to criticise the judge in the case, but I do know that two worthless worth-less drafts are in Los Angeles and that this hotel cashed them In good faith. Possibly that is not a crime, or possibly the complaint did not set-torth set-torth a crime. One thing is sure, and that Is, the drafts have not been paid." |
