Show CUP DEFENDERS AS EXPERIMENTS I Yachtsmen generally are considering consider-ing the three candldatoe for the honor hon-or of defending tho America's cup wsninst Sir Thomas Upton's Shamrock Sham-rock IV as experiments. Two of the vachts now under construction, the m Hcrreshoff craft and the racer which William Gardner is building for Alexander Alex-ander Smith Cochran, are both of the centerboard construction type, giving them a particularly deep draught which will admit -of an enormous spread of canvas. On the other hand, George Owens, who is constructing the "Tri City Syndicate" Syn-dicate" boat, Is expected to turn out a craft of a more conservative type, which will have a draught of less depth and will consequently carry less canvas. Under the present rules, the maximum maxi-mum draught is fixed at 13.75 feet. All but the Gardner boat will exceed this and will consequently be penalized penal-ized for time. Whether tho increased spread of canvas gained by the deeper draught will more than make up for the time penalty, will furnish a prob--lem which can only be solved when the elimination trials are run off. |
