when the latter officer arrived the fight was at its worst he at once took a hand the first man he tackled grabbed him about the legs and tried robite him while endeavoring deavo ring to tree himself his prisoner attempted to wrench his club from his hand it was then that vance put the quietus to the resisting hobo by delivering a blow upon he head with his club this time hadlock was battling with others of the camp and this fact was taken advantage of by the men upon whom the darbins dar bies had been previously placed they hurried away and were soon lost to sight three others 0 the gang were soon at the points where thoy were willing to call off pia game dunham and moore who were guarding the first prisoner had plenty t do while the officers were having T ir little tustle and it was necessary fo them to beat the fellow with the bi IT end of the pistol to force him into submission the fellows head was deity well battered up but he was B 1 full of fight officer vance took the prisoner in charge together with one of the crowd and they were taken to twenty fourth street where after they were handcuffed together they were turned over to special officer balne and yardmaster W one band free ho dealt balne a blow la the face and from the actions of the two prisoners it became evident that they meant to get away they were called upon to halt by mr scott but paid no attention evidently thinking that they had a lot of rubes to deal with in this thought they were sadly mistaken scott has seen enough mix ups in his day to know how to handle the best of them and it was not long before a well directed blow to the face senttie sent the most troublesome cf the two men to the ground the fellow called for a fair fight abid was permitted to rise again he bit the dust as did also his partner seeing that scott was no novice in the als hands they promised to be good later the officers loaded the men into the patrol wagon and they were taken to the station on the way up town one of the most unruly made a pass at officer vance and received a blow on the head from the officers club for his trouble A number of officers were then sent in search of the two men who had escaped after several hours spent in looking through the brush where they had been traced the police were forced to abandon the chase officer hadlock received several bad about the head but his injuries were
