Show WHEN SUCKERS BITE. Vr,W Tuesday several gentlemen met in the Boyd Park building, Salt Lake City, discussing the fact that the state government of Utah exercised about as much good horse sense in conducting the financial finan-cial affairs of the state as docs Tammany Hall in New York City which is known as the prince of grafters. Among those present were Hon. Alma Eldredge, Hon W. D. Livingston, Colonel Anderson Ander-son and William Glasmann. It was pointed out by the latter that it was worse than a crime to allow the secretary of the state land board and the state treasurer to have in their possession hundreds of thousands of dollars of the stale's money and not pay interest on the same to the state. It was stated that tho treasurer had over two million dollars in various funds, nnd never one cent's interest does the state receive. It was shown that the secretary of the land board has about a quarter of a million dollars in his hands that he calls a suspense fund " On all of the funds in the hands of both officers of-ficers the state of Utah should receive at least 4 per cent interest frbm tfie bnnks. That is what is paid to others by the bunks. Practically a hundred thousand dollars in interest is lost by the state each year. How best to cull the people's attention to this mat-' tcr was discussed. -Finally Mr. Glasmann said: "The boys are all asking me if I want a congressional nomina- B1s'p-mmm . i , . . . " ,'i. r tion I think I will just tell them 1 want to be secretary of the land board and they wiltfall wonder why I should switch from a big office to a little oncand thai will hold attention. The Stnndpat papers will all grab at it just as a sucker lakes a hook." Sure enough The Tribune took the bait all right. Now comes the Ogden Examiner. It too lakes -the hook, swallowing line and all, joyfully reproducing The Tribune's story on Glasmann wanting to be secretary of the state land board. Will some good Republican Standpatter get the state treasurer and the secretary of the state land board to tell who gets tho benefit bene-fit of the big funds they hold for the dear people of Utah? How long will the people of L'tah continue to be worked 7 |
