Dec. 17 Anacapa island, is-land, the desolate mountain top jutting jut-ting out of the sea a few . miles off Ventura, bore the last remaining hope today of those who still persist In belieing that thc sea has not claimed Horace Kearnev. the aviator, and his companion, Chester Lawrence, Law-rence, who vanished Saturday within an hour after thev had started on a hydro-aeroplane flight from Newport beach to San Francisco. The tug Collls was despatched today to search for the missing men on thc shores of the island, which is populated popu-lated only hy seabirds and sheep, and also to explore Santa Rosa. Santa Barbara Bar-bara and Son Miguel islands. The latter are off the course Kenrney was pursuing when he disappeared, however. how-ever. Boats are the only moans of communication com-munication between the islands and the mainland and definite information informa-tion will await the return of the tug. Washington. Dec. 17. Secretary MacYeaeh of the treasury department depart-ment today ordered a -revenue cutter on the Pacific coast to make a quick and extensive search for the missing aviator, Horace Kenrney of Chicago, and his passenger, Chester .Lawrence, a new-spaper man of Los Angeles, who! sailed in a hydro-aeroplane from Los Angeles Saturday for San Francisco, but who have not been heard from since. -oo |
