Show TRUE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS SEEN IN OQDEN. A minister, who each Christmas time quietly searches out the poor, nsked us If we knew any family In dlro distress. Ho wanted to know a father and mother who, in their pride, wero trying to conceal from the outside all knowledge of their poverty, so that on Christmas Eve or a day or two beforo, he might send necessities to them and trinkets trin-kets to tho children. Ho said the Martha society was reaching many worthy poor, not in the spirit of that charity which stings, but In an unostentatious way. The noble women were giving giv-ing as individuals where the plight of a family, too proud to bo placed In the position of tho recipients of chanty, was discovered, and much unheralded liberality has resulted. The Child Culture club has been inquiring after tho little ones, and may the Lord bless the Samaritans for their kindness of hearL Certainly Cer-tainly they have blessed themselves. They have rescued four crippled children from pain and deformity; they havo comforted many little hearts; they have opened the way for sunshine into more than one child's life. W-a are proud of tho women of Ogden In their labors of love, and the best part of It all Is that each year, after the holidays, the women continue the spreading of womanly kindness and goodness. The lodges have men out, Inquiring Inquir-ing as to those who are heavily burdened. Tho Salvation Army is planning to help the very poor. With the ministers, the womeu, the lodges and all doing their utmost' to make this a merry Christmas, we look forward to the great day of the year, which la a week from tomorrow, tomor-row, with no misgivings. We believe that If a man is "stingy" 358 days in the year and during Christmas week relaxes and does his full duty' In aiding others, ho will be recognized by St. Peter at the final accounting and have a falr- ly good prospect of being admitted I through the pearly gates; but, that S tho fellow of wealth who does not yield to hotter promotlngs than mean I selfishness, even during the Yuletlde, a will suffer In the world to come, and perhaps be consigned to Limbo, or some other dark place, there to con- jj template the wretchedness of one too niggardly to have ever felt the 1 izy of giving. So far, we have failed 2 to discover In Ogden a candidate for R Limbo. Our men and our women are I doing their utmost to drive Misery 1 an i Penury from this fair city. |
