Show RED LANTERN LEADS TO V ARREST w , It was reported from Riverside last evening that suspicious characters were making a rendezvous of u cellar belonging to John Simpson and that It was feared they were planning a tiain robbery. Red lanterns wero seen and other evidence pointed to a plot. Deputy Sheriffs DeVIne, Ludwig and Leatham were dispatched to the placo and, after waiting n concealment. conceal-ment. In the neighborhood a short time, one of tho men made an appearance appear-ance and started a fire. The officers waited for the other man, but, ho falling to appear, the man at tho flro was arrested and brought to tho county coun-ty Jail. The fellow gives his name as Johnson, but refuses to give his first name or to advise the officers of his purpose in remaining at the collar. He also refuses to give Information regarding his friend. Chicken feathers were found scattered scat-tered about the rendezvous. People living In that locality lately have missed many chickens, and there has been much petit thievery. The red lantern was discovered by the officers of-ficers and brought to the city. It is a railroad lantern covered with a red flannel, but Johnson will have nothing to say about It. When tho officers first came upon him at the cellar, Johnson threatened threat-ened violence but when searched no weapon was found on him, nor was there any around the premises. He is a young man and will state that he and his partner were remaining at the cellar a few days because thej had no other place to live. Tho partner has not been fouud and it is tho presumption of the officers of-ficers that, on learning of the arrest of his companion, he left the country. |
