Show MAIL TRAIN Robbers Brandish Their Revolve rs But Do Not Shoot Drain, Ore., Juno 17. The southbound south-bound Shasta limited, which left Portland Port-land at G o'clock last night, was held up and the mall car robbed by two highwaymen at 11:15 p. m., between Drain and Yoncalla. The robbers entered en-tered the mall car, held up tho clerks and looted the car. Thoy stopped the train at Yoncalla and mnde their escape. es-cape. Posses wfere searching for them west of Yoncalla this morning, but up to a late hour they were still at large. Although the two robbers brandished brandish-ed their rovolvers, not a shot was fired. The mall clerks found them-solves them-solves helpless before the wenpons of the hlghwnymen. Ono robber held them covered while the other ripped open tho mnll sacks and ransacked their contents. It Is not known how much booty the desperadoes Bccurcd. As tho train neared Yoncalla, one of the highwaymen pulled the emergency emer-gency signal and the train was stopped. stop-ped. The robbers then leaped from the mall car and disappeared down the village streeL The conductor Is positive that the outlaws boarded the train here, but whether they crawled on to the root or swung on to the platform he does not know. The first Intimation the mall clerks had of tho attack was when tho door of the car swung suddenly open and thoy found themselves faced by tho highwaymen. None attempted resistance resist-ance as' the Jntrduers proceeded to the looting of the sacks. The conductor and engineer of the trnln had no Inkling of any trouble until tho Blgnal to stop at Yoncalla was sounded, and the mall clerks raised rais-ed tho alarm. Officers here and Sheriff K. Qulnn at Roseburg wore notified and posses were Immodlately started In pursuit of the robbers Tho mall car was the only ono disturbed dis-turbed by the robbers Tho passengers passeng-ers and trainmen were not molested. Both robbers are described as about five feet seven Inches tall, smooth-3havon smooth-3havon and dressed In dark clothes. They wore black hats, neither wore a mask They were about 2S years old Three mall clerks were engaged about their work Just after tho train pulled out of this place when two men entered tho forward door, or the car, and pointing three revolvers at tho clerks, ordered "Hands Up!" Tho mnll clerks complied and were directed to go to one end of the car. One of the robbers, evidently tho leader, selected the mall sacks ho wanted, while tho other kept the clerks under his guns. Tho leader gathered the sacks Into a heap near the doors. The robbers then asked how far It was to Yoncalla and ordered order-ed one of tho mnll clerks to stop tho train there for them. Thoy said they wore laboring men and worked near Drain. A fow moments later, one of ' the robbers asked If they wero not near Yoncalla, to which tho clerk re- j piled that thoy wore. 'Ino robbers then told tho clerk he had hotter nig- j nal the engineer Tho clerk pulled tho cord and, as the train came to a stop, the robbers picked up the mall sacks and left tho train. They ran through the town and Into the woods on the other side. They Informed tho town constable and ho at onco roused the citizens and started start-ed in pursuit of tho robbers. Sheriff Geo. D. Quine of Douglass j county, at Roseburg. was notified by I telephone and, securing on engine. J set out at onco for Yoncalla, accom- ' panlcd by his deputies. On arrival thero ho formed a posso and at day- J Hghl took up tho search, the local i olllcers having abandoned It after sov-oral sov-oral hours fruitless hunt.
