ALV0RD FINED BY MURPHY Charged with violating tho city ord-Inanco ord-Inanco governing the operation of a second-hand store, by not voporting to tho police the purchase of a certain watch, I. T. .Vlvord was fined $2i in police court this morning, the police magistrate stating that a second violation viola-tion of the ordinance by tho defendant or a similar violation by any other dealer in the city would call forth a fine of $100. Alvord, when arraigned, pleaded not guilty, qualifying tho plea by stating that he had "done nothing more than every merchant and socond-hand dealer deal-er in the city is continually doing. On the stand he testified that he remembered remem-bered purchasing tho watch in question ques-tion and believed that he had made a report of the transaction to the police as required by tho city ordinances. Ho contonded "that the large volume of business which he does makes It difficult to remember every purchase and It might be that ho had overlooked the matter of making the report. The officer who had discovered the watch In the Alvord store stated on 'the witness stand that tho watch belonged be-longed to John Sargent and had been stolen from him some time In December. Decem-ber. He further stated that had the purchase of tho timepiece l)een made to the police, the watch could have been returned to the owner several weeks ago. In summing up tho caBe, tho Judge stated that the ordinance requiring all pawnbroker and second-hand dealers to report all transactions to tho police was on the books to prevent thefts and to recover stolen goods, and that to Impress upon all tho dealers In J tho city the necessity of abiding by the ordinance he would ImpoBc a flno of $25. "If this ordinance Is again violated, the violator will bo fined $100," added tho judge |
