Show CONVICTS Are Sent to the United States by Prison Aid Societies New York, May 3. On the theory that many of the holdups and other crimes committed along the New York water front are the work of ox-con-vlcts from Europe, who get ashore without the knowledge qf the immigration immi-gration authorities as petty officials of incoming steamers, the National Reform association of this city has decided tcundertakc an independent inspection of all arriving liners with a view to identifying any English convicts con-victs who may be assigned as members mem-bers of the crow. A retired trans-Atlantic captain, who Is directing this novel investigation, declares that an English prison aid society Is tho chief offender, systematically system-atically shipping ex-convlcts hero under un-der tho guise of under-offlclals of the big boats. The convicts, he says, aro on the ship's manifest as fifth, sixth and seventh offlcors, but when tho boat arrives on this side they walk ashore and never return. |
