Show ITALY AWAKENED. The Larger Cities Will Han Charge ol the Exhibit. he America, the representative newspaper news-paper of the Italian colony in Chicago and throughout the west generally, has special telegraphic messages from Rome concerning the exhibit at the world's fair to be made from Italy. It states that the central committee in charge of the world's fair Italian exhibit, acting with the concurrence of the chamber of commerce at Eome, has completed the organization of the committees appointed ap-pointed by the chambers of commerce in the principal Italian cities. Milan, Genoa, Turin, Florence, Naples and Palermo will, with Eome, lead in the frreat Italian display. The feeling and interest now thoroughly awakened in Italy are such that it is evident that the artists and merchants fully understand that their exhibits to be made in Chicago will probably open up to them new avenues of patronage and commercial exchange. They are evidently determined to work cooperatively cooper-atively and make the very best of the opportunity. In Home Deputy Ferrari, the celebrated cele-brated sculptor, is especially active in the art circles. He was the projector of the monument to Giovanno Bruno, and it is stated that he will send an original statue of great beauty. Basile. the noted architect, will forward the designs of the Palermo exposition. The leading features of the commercial exhibit ex-hibit will be fruits, samples pf preserved fruits, wines, collections of medicinal plants, marble, bronze, and metal work. Collections of antiquities will form a part of the art ' exhibit. The Italian government has thoroughly promulgated through the countrr its proclamation in reference to the world's fair through the agency of the minister of commerce and agriculture. agricul-ture. While the government will send a ship of war to transport the exhibits and give full official sanction to' the undertaking, un-dertaking, yet it prefers that the details de-tails of creating, collecting and taking charge of the exhibit should be undertaken under-taken by the chamber of commerce. It is thought that this is much the better plan rather than that the government . hould have to organize the details of the world's fair bureau. Nevertheless it is expressly stipulated that the direction direc-tion and installation of the exhibit shall be under government control. The central committee has been invested in-vested with full power to pass upon all proposals and to decide upon the value, rarity, and appropriateness of collective or individual exhibits to be made, either of the commercial or artistic character, and it will also prepare a special catalogue cata-logue for the Italian section. The committee com-mittee will also nominate two or more persons who with the approval of the government will act as commissioners com-missioners and who will be sent to Chicago as the representatives of the government to personally superintend super-intend the transportation, disposition and return of the exhibits from Italy. |
