Show Old Methods Must Give : Way to New Facts Last week we heard and read much about the new atomic bomb. This may be the beginning of a 1 great industrial and social revolu- tion. Not all scientific improvements ! have come in the field of war. Just as the sulfa and penicillin drugs . have a tremendous effect upon ' medicine so have two new chem-, chem-, icals come into the field of agriculture. agri-culture. On Wednesday, August 8, some scientists visited in Millard ' county and observed the work which Mr. Lieberman at Delta, and j his associate, Mr. Hare, have been doing with the new chemical DDT. . i Among these top. scientists were ' men from the east who have been J " interested and associated with al-1 3 falfa seed production for years. The chemical DDT may change the me-5 me-5 thods of seed production and make 5 it possible to eliminate many of the harmful insects that work on 1 alfalfa seed. Improper use of the ' chemcial on the other hand, may kill off all the good insects as well I as bad. According to these scientists, it is absolutely necessary for pollin-" pollin-" ating insects to be saved. Farmers ' who have observed the results of r DDT must if they are going to use it, use it at the right time and ' follow instructions definitely. Millard county has always been 0 a great alfalfa seed producing area. The use of the chemical may in-v in-v sure continued seed production, however, farmers who expect to " grow seed in the future, will be rather surprised to know that most e of the old fields of common and s Grimm, Cossack and Pioneer, will have to give way to newer and s better varieties. We who produce t the seed won't determine what we are going to grow; those who buy y the seed and demand the new var-o var-o ieties of Ranger, Buffalo, Atlanta II and others, will force us to grow ', them. - This may be a God send as it e will force the plowing of old fields i. and some better farming practices i- will have to be used. Those .who i- get on the band wagon first, will 1- surely be paid for their effort. ?I Many of the new weed chemicals of the 2-4-D formula such as Weed-if Weed-if one and Weedice will give results e comparable in weed ocntrol to DDT S in insect control. Progressive farm-i- ers will watch the results of these .- two chemicals and will quickly a- dapt the use of them for the bet-e bet-e terment of their own farm produc-i- tion. s George Whornham, Co.
