Show Garffs After Salt Lake. "H tho pioposal or Messrs. Garll & Son or Logan meets with tho samo ravorrrom the City Council that It has troin Mayor Morris," says Wednesday's Wed-nesday's S. L. Tribune, It is sare to predict that the citizens or Salt Lake will bo furnished with better light servlco and that the city will yet own Its own light sytciii. The proposition made by the Logan firm to tho Mayor was submitted by him to tho Council last night, accompanied by a communication com-munication supporting the offer. Roth communications were referred to a special committee of five, consisting con-sisting or Hewlett, Hartenstcin, Martin, Mar-tin, Rlack and Prcecc, with the Mayor associated. Tho communications from Mr. OarIT read as follows: "Wc notice in jour report of the city that you pay the sum of $:t2,(J.4 per annum on 484 street lights and ery poor servlco at that. We have recently re-cently secured in Salt Lake county a very valuable povvcrslte that wc Intend developing this spring, with a view of transmitting the power to the mines. How would you like to take under advisement a proposition something like this: Wc enter Into a contract with your city to build a reliable, up-to-date light and power plant, that wilt develop say 00 per cent more arc lights than you arc now using, besides lighting all your municipal buildings. You to let us the contact to light jour streets at about tho same rate jouaro now paying for the term of four or five years and at thccxplra-t thccxplra-t Ion of that time we to give your city absolute title to the plant, all hi llist-class llist-class working order, for some nominal figure, say 2." per cent of Its cost, which amount can be stipulated and agreed upon. This will enable your city to become owners of your lighting light-ing system tor about the same monov that you arc now paying out and own nothing. And wo shall be In this amount paid our commission and time ror services. Monopoly and extortion go hand hi hand the world over and the only remedy Is municipal ownership or these public utilities, same as Logan, Rrigham, Lchl, American Fork and other towns. If this proposition suits you wc shall bo pleased to meet you at an early date to discuss tho matter. Ample referenco will bo furnished when wanted." The development of this matter will prove of considerable Interest to many Loganltes. Mr. Garff offered to do some very excellent things ror Logan city but the council was loo obtuse to see the advantage or periulttlng him to make such sacrifices. |
