Potential Fire Hazards High in Cedar "I want to caution people this month to be very careful about potential fire hazards. July is usually the worst month and the Fire Department needs all the cooperation which it can get from the public. We ask that children only use sparklers under their parents supervision and that matches be kept away from children. We have a very dangerous situaiton in terms of possible fires," stated Fire Chief David Bentley. The Fire Department has responded to 31 fires this past month-five more than the chief can ever remember for a four week period of time in June. He is expecting that July will probably be worse and is concerned that local residents should be alerted to the problem. Four fires occurred on Thur., June 28. The first was at 3:20 p.m. at the bus depot where a bus tire caught on fire resulting in $1,000 worth of damage. Responding to a blaze at e, p.m. on Altamira Ave. the fire department finally got the 20 ft. high flames in a vacant lot under control. Two boys were referred to juvenile court on charges of causing the fire bying with matches. An 8:05 p.m. call in Cedar Valley brought a response to a fire at the Forrest Bryant farm. Bentley thought that the fire was caused by children playing with matches. A shed was lost and damage was estiamted at $300. At 9:55 the department repsonded to a fire which began when Jeff Ennis was working on the carburator of his car. Damages was estiamted to be $150.00. On Friday, June 29, the department responded to a 12:55 p.rsj. call at Driftwood Lane l h ' Spanish Trails subdivison where high winds had made a fire burn out of control. The fire burned approximately one and a half acres of land but no damage was done. Another brush fire was reported at 2:20 p.m. at the Del Rich home across from Garden Park. Again approximately ap-proximately one and a half acres of land was burned but no estimable damage was done. The cause was attributed at-tributed to children playing with matches. Another brush fire occurred oc-curred at 149 South 500 West at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 1. Bentley said that a tree andsome brush were burned. The worst fire of the week occurred on July 1 at the Cedar West Stake Farm where sheds, corrals, 15 acres of land and five tons of hay burned for an estimated loss of $5,000. The department depart-ment was called at 1 : 10 p.m. Worth Wood's farm and men finally left the scene at 10 p.m. Bentley said that it took about 25,000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze and that he thought the cause was a cigarette. |
