Show Utah Listed "Top" Retirement State The July 1979 issue of "Money" magazine listed Utah as number one in a list of the ten best states to retire to. The magazine had the study done by Chase Econometric Associates, Inc., specialists in economic forecasting. Basing the study on economics while considering climate, culture, recreation, 'and medical facilities, the magazine states that Utah offers moderate living costs and utility rates and excludes up to $6,000 of pension revenues each year from state income taxes. The article discusses the Salt Lake City and southern Utah areas as good areas for retirees. Noting the warm desert climate in the southern part of the state, the article also mentions local colleges, golf, swimming. boating and skiing opportunities. The magazine also states that Utah is one of the fastest growing states in the country. All of the ten states named are in the south or west- where "Money" states that the lifestyle is easier and usually quite a bit cheaper. Other states named in the order of the study's ranking are: Louisiana, South Carolina, Nevada, Texas, New Mexico, Alabama, Arizona, Florida and Georgia. The worst state for retirement was listed as Massachusetts because of its high utility rates, high taxes, high unemployment, and lack of part-time job opportunities. The New England states. New York and New Jersey were among the worst ten states according to the article for retirement purposes. |
