Show Crime Rate High in County Iron County ranks third in the state with a crime rate of 41.86 per thousand people in a report recently published by the Department of Public Safety. Ranking behind Salt Lake and Summit counties the quoted figure refers to "Part I Crimes Offenses" Of-fenses" (felonies and misdemeanors) and is based on an estiamted 14.000 population for the county. Iron County totaled two arrests for rape, four arrests for larceny-theft, and 32 arrests for motor vehicle theft. The total arrest figure for the Jan.-Dec.1978 Jan.-Dec.1978 report in the county was 586. Total arrests for the state were 55,401 . Four Hundred seventeen of the arrests occurred in Cedar City, with Parowan totaling 13 and the remainder of the county totaling 156. Juvenile arrests totaled 184, adult arrests totaled 396. Drug related arrests totaled 24 with one being a juvenile charge. Alcohol violations totaled 30 for juveniles and 172 for adults. Iron County has a total of 25 law enforcement officers for a 1.79 per 1.000 population average. This figure was above the state average of 1.36 officer per 1,000 population. This first report was prepared under the Uniform Crime Reporting Program which Utah joined last year. 43 states now participate in the program. The lack of similar figures for 1977 makes it impossible to compare this year's figures in terms of crime increases or decreases. Legislature, other governmental officials and the public as to the nature of the crime problem in Utah, its magnitude and trends." slates the report. The report presents many statistics: a major crime occurs every eight minutes in Utah; a murder occurs every 7.3 days; a rape occurs every 1.3 days; a robbery occurs every 10.2 hours; an assault every 1.3 hours; an auto theft every 2 hours; a larceny-theft every 13 minutes; a burglary every 34 6 minutes. Murder is most likely lo occur between white male acquaintances on a Monday. The largest group of victims are between 25-2!) in age and the largest -group of offenders between bet-ween 20-24. The weapon most often used is a handgun. The worst month for rapes and assaults is late June-early July Robbery on highways accounts for 33 percent of the total for that crime, with robbery of commercial houses ranking second with 27 percent. Most burglaries of a residence occur between 6 a.m. lo 6 p.m. and most non-residence burglaries occur from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Twenty percent of all law enforcement en-forcement officers assaulted occurred oc-curred between midnight and 2 a.m. and 19 percent of such assaults occurred oc-curred between 10 p.m. and midnight. The report is dedicated to state tropper Ray Lynn Pierson who was killed in the line of duty last fall while patrolling Utah's Highways. |
