We feel that too few people have the power over the majority. And if these people don't feel the need to answer to those people then we have no representation. We ask ourselves, did you do what was best for the students of Cedar High School? or did you do what was best in defense of your actions? Many people feel the answers you gave to the question before the board were outdated and nit picking. It won't matter whether you say the issue is closed or not. The issue will remain open in the mind of the people from now on. I think many have lost confidence in the judgement of the Board. We feel that the vote of confidence or lack of it will be reflected in the next election. The biggest unanswered question is where do you go when your representatives let you down. How does the Board justify the question that they are acting in the best interest of the public, when the public keep saying they feel best ; served by retaining Dr. Hawley. Does six people know better than six hundred? Sincerely Marsha A. Perkins. Pear Editor: I am writing in regards to a letter written by Mr. Michael Coffeen and published in the last issue of the Iron County Record. I'm afraid I can't agree with Mr. Coffeen. First off, I'd like to know why, if Mr. Coffeen's complaints are against Steve Gadegaard (as it appears from reading his letter), did he wait until Steve was gone to publish his letter? Secondly, after serving for some time on the ambulance crew last summer, I have nothing but good to say about Steve Gadegaard and the head of nursing Susan Taysom, especially in regard to what they have done for the Iron County Ambulance Service during the past two years. I don't believe that Mr. Coffeen is qualified to judge the ambulance, because he wasn't here to see what Steve had to start with. No, the Iron County Ambulance Service isn't perfect. It can't be, it's run by human beings, none of which is perfect. As for his allegation that starting another E.M.T. training class is a waste of taxpayers money, I can't believe he said that. Last time I checked, the person who wanted E.M.T. training had to pay a $40.00 fee to get into the class. But even if the county were paying for it completely, I think that having more people with enough quality medical training to save people's lives could do nothing but good and would be well worth the money spent. Next time, I'd like to suggest that Mr. Coffeen obtain all the facts and consider both sides of the situation before he writes libelous letters. Sincerely, Steve Jensen Members of Iron County School Board Open Letter to Board and citizens Dear Members, I have labored over the idea of writing to you and finally decided that" concerning 'the Dr. Hawley issue, jTTany things have gone unsaid. As you are well aware this is no small issue. Hundreds of people are concerned, and interested. You might say this issue has generated more interest than any other in recent years. I have many personal felings regarding the issue. But when I speak now it is to tell you what I hear. I think the board has a right and should hear public opinion. I do not suggest that I speak for the town. But for the group of people who have talked with me as concerned citizens. There has been an air of politeness around the issue. But I know that very few feel polite about it. For once we would like to speak straight from the shoulder. The following are not leveled accusations, but real feelings expressed by a good number of people. The boards integrity as individuals to make decisions based on fact is in question. It seems strange that about six months ago Dr. Hawley was given a clean bill of health and now has to be removed from his position. That is a contradiction. Also that if he is not doing a satisfactory job at one school (in the eyes of the board) then why move him to another. If the School has not really shown good progress, then why are so many students and parents so involved in justice for what we consider a poor situation. Especially in the summer , when people like to be left alone. Why do policeman say that it is the lowest year in vandalism and other problems at school. Why is the contradiction of success mostly between the citizens and the Board. Is it the policy of the district to move their failures? Is this why the demotion of Dr. Hawley? If a man stands up for what he thinks is right, is this insubordination? Hearing over, there are still many unanswered questions in our minds. The Board seems to say you have had your hearing and everything is over. But very little is settled. Important t questions go unanswered. Like why didn't the School Board bring in all the principals involved in moves to begin with and treat them all with respect equally? Why does the Board hand their duties over to the superintendent. Why doesn't the board make policy changes to limit terms of the superintendant and all principals to regular terms and move to freshen on a regular basis, so that one person doesn't have the opportunity op-portunity to inflict his way of doing things for too long of period. It seems that there is not set policy on many things that have great im-protance. im-protance. I'm sure the Board feels that they have been cooperative in this hearing. We feel the Board owes the citizens certain things. One thing we feel the need for, is the board to support the people of the area as well as the citizens supporting the board. |
