At this time may Elks ',' members and their friends Ix- reminded of the purpose of Klkdom and their aid is . solicited in making the many ." programs it sponsors a reality. For the benefit of those . new Youth Activities carried , on by the Elks on the local, slateand national level, are: ." ' 1- Klks National Youth Week - Held annually beginning May 1 of each year. Most all of the Lodges observe Youth Week in some , ' fashion by recognizing their ' scholarship winners, essay contest winners and their teen-agers of the Month-Year Month-Year and making their ' Youth Activities Citation Award. 2- Teenager of the month -j" A program new to our Lodge, which gives recognition to outstanding students. This program is v generality conducted during the school year with the aid f of the student body officers j and the councilors. ! 3- Youth and America - A i program that is oriented toward encouraging the ; youth to be good Americans ! and to participate in : Americanism type activities ; such as July 4th celebrations and our own Flag Day I Celebration. Usually an ; essay contest is conducted in ; the fall with awards being made to the top three win-! win-! ners. ! Drug Abuse Education - Is a new program being conducted con-ducted by both the local Lodges and by the State Association and we are open to any and all suggestions for (he betterment of this , program. The State of Utah : has an active Drug Abuse j Program and we hope we : can become a part of their ; effort. 5- Youth Activities j Citations - Plaques are given i to persons by the different Lodges throughout the state for their outstanding work : with the yout of their ; communities. A person winning this award does not have to be a member of an Elks Lodge but has to be active in some or several phases of youth activity outside the Lodge in the community. This year Mr. Harold Shirley received this plaque for his support and activity with the youth ol Cedar City and the outstanding out-standing job that he had done. The Lodge was proud to make this presentation to Mr. Shirley and is now busy searching for some person to receive this award next year. 6- Hoop Shoot - A very successful program for the youth of the community is generally started in January and ends in March. It is under the supervision of the Youth Activities Chairman (athletics). 7- Our most outstanding program and the one receiving most recognition is our "Most Valuable Sludent Contest", which is conducted each year on behalf of the Elks National Foundation. We have a good record in this contest and in the very near future we hope to have another national winner. A National Winner receives a Scholarship for 4 years amounting to $12,000,00. Utah has had three National Winners in I he past live years, a record the high school seniors of Utah can be proud of. The Cedar City Elks Lodge each year, besides the "Most Valuable Student" contest winners, makes the following scholarship awards to the Southern Utah State College and the Cedar City High School. SUSC receives three scholarships amounting to approximately $1,200.00. Cedar City High School receives $300.00 in scholastic and vocational scholarships. The Cedar City Elks Lodge is pleased that they can do this to help worthy students get the education they desire. Last year our scholarships amounted to over $3,000.00 to High School seniors and SUSC students. |
