Show Kids today seem to be Missing a Lot of Fun . . . Mary ftae Evans July 24th, or Utah's Pioneer Day, seems to be a day for reminiscing about one's pioneer ancestors and for some digging up of childhood memories --especially --especially for those of us about to reach, passing through, or refusing to leave the age of 40. Things change so fast. I'm not sure but what kids today are going to feel a little cheated when they get older and look back for childhood memories. I mean what can they say, "I had a lot of fun when I was a kid in the 70's. I watched T.V. 6 hours a day and my Mom baked the best frozen pizza on the block." What ever happened to marbles, jump rope, jacks, roller skates, Run Sheep Hun, and Kick the Can? They used to run in seasons at the schools. Of course the architects really goofed when they planned Die Parowan Elementary School building . . there are no platforms to climb on and play jacks (the old yellow building was a jack player's heaven). Most kids today have never tasted sugar dumplings, homemade butter, fried mush, Lumpy Dick, or fresh cream skimmed off a pan of milk and poured over peaches picked off the tree in the back yard. Of course there are some memories that are not so clear--the out house for one example. When I was a child we lived on a farm with coyotes howling around every night and wow was it dark! Nightmare Theatre is nothing compared to the fear generated by a trip out to that dark scary place at night. Daytime was'nt much better; the whole place was infested with lizards and those spiders . . . you never knew where they were lurking. The other plumbing wasn't so hot either; it would have put a real strain on the well if we had bathed even half as often as kids do now. The Number 3 tub would have been worn out in a week. Thimking about the past has given me an idea. I'm going to get some of the neighborhood kids together tomorrow night and teach them how to play ' . Hun Sheep Run, but a.as, with my luck as soon as they learn how they won't let me play any more. |
