Show NOTICE The Dixie National Forest has received an application from the Mountain Maid Mulch Plant in Fillmore, Utah, to mine and remove the peat moss from a 5-acre wetland bog located within the old Lowder Creek Ranch recently acquired through exchange by the U. S. Government. The Forest Service is asking for comments, com-ments, and recommendations recom-mendations from any interested in-terested individuals, groups, and all government agencies concerning this proposal. The wetland bog is located at an elevation of 10,400 feet in Section 19, T30S, 118 W and fed by two springs which flow into Lowder Creek. The peat has developed over a period of many hundreds of years in a glaciated basin vegetated by sub-alpine spruce and fir and surrounded by vertical ledges and talus slopes. Koads were constructed to the bog and throughout the old ranch property prior to government acquisition. The applicant proposes to dredge 10,000 tons of peat from the bog each year over an 8 year period until all of the peat is removed. The peat would be dredged onto the bank during the summer, sum-mer, allowed to dry for about 60 days and then trucked to Fillmore via Panguitch during the fall. Trucking would involve approximately 500 - 30 yard loads per year. Ap- proximately 20 per cent of the peat would be used at the Fillmore mushroom plant and the balance would be shipped to other plants in the United States. Any person desiring additional ad-ditional information on this proposal is invited to contact the District Ranger at Cedar City. Comments and recommendations should be submitted to: District Forest Ranger, Dixie National Forest, P.O. Box 627, 82 North 100 East, Cedar City, Utah 84720, prior to August 15, 1978. |
