Show BLM develops Recreation Areas Devloped recreational sites are maintained across the state by the Bureau of Land Management with one of the more popular sites being the Red Cliffs Recreation Area in southwestern Utah. Red Cliffs is about 33 miles south-t south-t west of Cedar City and can be reached by taking the Leeds exit off 1-15 and following the BLM recreation area signs. The area contains 13 individual camping units with cooking grills and a large picnic area. For the camping units there is a $2 per night user fee. Reservations for group use of the picnic area can be made by calling the BLM Dixie Resource Area Office in St. George, 673-4654; a charge of 25 cents per person is made for reserved use of the picnic site. Fresh water and toilet facilities are available but no power or trailer hook-ups. The Silver Reef hiking trail (one-eighth mile long and quite strenuous) extends to a lookout point over the goast town of Silver Reef. The Desert Wilderness Nature Trail is a fairly easy one-half mile self -guided hike with interpretive brochures available at the trailhead. Although Red Cliffs can be extremely ex-tremely hot in the summer, it offers several cool, inviting shade areas. A Utah Travel Council map covers the southwest corner of Utah and can be obtained from Utah Travel Council, Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service and some other offices for 25 cents a copy. |
