Show 0 The public will understand the "true costs" of the Senate-passed Endangered Species Act under an amendment attached by U. S. Senator Jake Garn (R-Utah) (R-Utah) The amendment requires the designation of a species' "critical habitat" at the time it is listed as endangered en-dangered or threatened. "People often do not realize the full impact of the endangered species designation until they see the extent and nature of the habitat which is deemed critical to a species' continuing con-tinuing existence," Garn said. "They need to know what's happening and that efforts to protect a particular par-ticular species may not be costless." In the past, Garn said, the critical habitat announcement an-nouncement has frequently been delayed for months after a species is declared endangered. "Under my amendment, the public will know what the potential ramifications are as soon as a wound fin minnow, snail darter or razorback chub is added to the list." The Utah Republican pointed out that at least four different species of fish in the Colorado River have been designated as endangered or threatened. "But federal authorities have not been forthcoming with the critical habitat determination because it could include the entire Colorado River Basin. I suspect they fear the public outcry which will naturally follow such an announcement," an-nouncement," he said. |
