Show ousfe of Eeptesientattoeg Congressman Dan Marriott today said he was encouraged by an apparent softening of the Carter Administration position on the so-called "160-acre" limitation law. Appearing before the House Interior Water and Power Subcommittee Sub-committee today, Interior Secretary Cecil Andrus proposed an increase in that acreage eligible for federal water to 480 owned and leased acres per person. Marriott, a member of the committee, said he was encouraged by the proposal, but suggested that a nationwide formula may not be acceptable. "It may yet take the outright repeal of the law, leaving no limits at all," he said. "That has been the practice for years anyway. The question now is whether we need to resurrect the limit at any level. Circumstances vary so much region to region that what may be good in California may not be good in Utah. "We are really talking about treating people fairly according to their circumstances, cir-cumstances, and with the Central Utah Project growing toward completion, the acreage limitation law will have increasing importance." im-portance." .
