Show Area handicapped Summer Program Slated A special summer recreation and learning program for physically and developmenuilly disabled children and adults in the Beaver, Kane, Garfield and Iron County area will begin this month. "For the first part of the summer, groups in each county will hold their own programs. For the two-week period between August 3-13, all participants will reside in Cedar City for several group trips and activities," Virginia Higbee, Volunteer Support Service Coordinator, Coor-dinator, Southern Utah State College School of Continuing Continuing Education, said. Activities in Iron County begin July 5 with a cookout being held at 4:30 p.m. at the SUSC Famuly Living Center. Regularly scheduled classes begin Thursday. All classes will be held in the SUSC Family Living Center. "Because most of the older participants work, the 2:30-4 p.m. sessions each weekday are geared primarily for the younger children, while the 4-5:30 weekday sessions and-Tuesday and-Tuesday and Thursday evening sessions are planned to include all age groups," Mrs. Higbee said. ' "This year the program has been expanded to include in-clude several learning-type classes dealing with community com-munity helpers, signs and money, shopping and cooking, music and rhythm, along with arts and crafts and physical activities," Higbee said. Along with the Tuesday and Thursday evening jogging and Special Olympics activities, swimming and volleyball sessions are being planned, time to be announced later. On July 12, participants from Garfield County will be picked up by Mrs. Higbee and Tom Walker, a longtime long-time teacher of the developmentally disabled in Cedar City, then taken to Escalante for a day of recreational activities. This Garfield County Activity Day will be held each Wednesday until the group moves to Cedar City for the final two weeks of the summer program. "Volunteers are needed for the two-month session," Mrs. Higbee said. "There are many different components com-ponents involved in the summer program; many varied talents are needed."
