This letter is in regard to the statements j by a Mr. Michael Cannon, in your last copy j of the Iron County Record. j I received a call on the fire phone in my j home, and Firemen Gentry also took the j call at the Fire Station. The man calling j said that an alarm had been pulled by a j small child at the Shakespearean Stage, and could not be shut off. As this alarm is a local alarm, we do not know it is ringing until we receive such a report. In Cedar City we have many of this type of alarms. All schools, as well as any building of public assembly, is required by law to have this type of system. In Cedar City only three alarms are hooked into our system; these are Coleman Company, Cedar City Products, and Valley View Medical Center. I feel sure that the residents of Cedar City know the qulaity of fire protection that they are receiving. Cedar City has over $350,000 in fire apparatus at todays prices, 30 well-trained volunteers, and three paid firemen. Average response time on any fire is 45 seconds in leaving the Fire House with the first truck. j Our Community was re-rated this year I by Insurance Services of Utah, and Cedar City was rated class five, no Fire Department in the State of Utah with any I Volunteer personnel has a better rating. I With this rate the savings to the residence of Cedar City was over $150,000. ......... ,i, WearenotsatistieainDeingas good as ine i best five communities in the State, but are striving for a class four fire rate. Mayor Sawyers has pledged his support in at- taining this goal. When our city goes into a class four, we will be the only City in Utah in a Class Four, and the savings to our j residence will be about $150,000 in rate reduction in insurance. ... Once in a great while a citizen will bother to praise the fire department when their home or property has been saved from destruction, but it is human nature to criticize when they feel that they have a gripe, and very few even take time to get the facts, as is the case of Mr. Cannon. I feel his statement was totally incorrect as wehn I arrived at the College I asked him where the alarm was located that had been pulled, and not where the fire was, as we were already aware that there was no fire. I'm sure that the actor that called us will verify that he told us that there was no fire, and that the alarm had been pulled by a child; this statement can also be verified by recording at the Utah Highway Patrol Office. In Mr. Cannon's situation I would have been thankful that I had not inconvenienced in-convenienced the whole Fire Department with a response call, and had only called out two firemen and Mr. Kunz of the College. Thank you for taking time to read this article. I'm very proud of The Cedar City Fire Department and proud to be their Chief. r)QttH IT Runtlpv |
