Show S CLAUDE'S I omnwd& by Claude Orton With the passing of Leonard Leon-ard Topham two weeks ago, my thoughts wander back to the late 1910s and Parly 1950s when I was serving as Paro-wan Paro-wan Stake athletic director, a part of the M. I. A. program. Leonard was a member of the Stake High Council, and was over the MIA organizations. The athletic program didn't seem to be very popular in our stake at that time, and had to get by with very little support. And I remember well how Leonard, as I usually called him, always used to go to bat for me, especially for funds to support the program, pro-gram, as well as in other ways. In fact during this time he was about all the support I had, but he was with me through all six years, making it possible for the youth of the stake to participate in it. He was a wonderful man and a fine supporter bf my program. I won't forget him, ever. . ; . ' . ' -: Last week's editorial in the Iron " County Record gave me much food for thought as I was setting it into type. It dealt with a character Abbie ( Hoffman, who has done everything every-thing which I feel is contrary to American life and the constitution con-stitution which guides our actions ac-tions from day to day. ' Now he has written a book, encouraging its readers to follow fol-low in his footsteps in teaching teach-ing them to do everything in their power to overcome the American way of life. It tells how to commit murder, to steal, and calls our country a "Pig Empire", this "Prison that is Amerika". Now I have been led to believe be-lieve that doing things and expounding things which will overthrow our government, destroy de-stroy our freedom and being a leader in carrying out this sort of things, was one of the things which our Constitution Constitu-tion says is outside our laws. So how does such a person get away with what he is do. ing. Has the judiciary of our country so twisted the meaning mean-ing of that revered document, that It will tolerate this sort of thing? Have those venerable ven-erable black-robed men on the supreme Court in Washington Wash-ington come to read such things in that constitution, that a few persons can plot the overthrow of our government govern-ment with complete immunity? immuni-ty? If so, it is time to rewrite re-write that document, or get an entire new set of supreme court justices, that will interpret inter-pret our present one in the way our forefathers drew It up to be. Are we going to revert back to the power problems of last winter because of an antique-quated antique-quated power line, that gave us so many power outages last winter?. Most of the residents resi-dents of our city were without with-out power on Wednesday eve-ing eve-ing for a two and one-half hour period, because of the failure of this old pre-war line used to wheel power to us by California-Pacific Utilities, Utili-ties, a line which they were supposed to have rebuilt or repaired to do away with this sort of thing. We wonder if we are going to be subjected to this nuisance nui-sance for another period while the company dilly-dallys on the construction of a new line from Cedar City, or decides to bring the power direct to us from the line which carrlea the Lake Powell power across our valley? We hope not In the meantime, I need partlme helper to keep my electric clocks regulated so I can tell what time it is for sure. Maybe I ought to Junk the works and get a wind-up one, which I would probably forget to wind. Mrs. Fay Alvey, Escalanta reporter to the Garfield County Coun-ty News, infers that clothes are now so scanty that its a shame, but they sure furnish a lot of meat for the mosqui-tos, mosqui-tos, just the same. We understand from Gale Stolk that players In the District Dis-trict Little League meet at Kanab, will have to appear on the playing field with regulation reg-ulation hair cuts, or else. And he says that this also applies to the managers and coaches of the teams. Wonder how the Parowan team stacked up on this matter? |
