Show Virgin River gorge road bid set at $3.5 million a mile Bids to construct the Interstate Inter-state Highway 15 in the Virgin Vir-gin River Gorge south of St. George, were let Friday by the Arizona Highway Department. The low bidder on the 3.87 miles of construction was Peter Kiewit Sons Co., of Omaha, Oma-ha, Neb. Their bid was for $13,851,841 and was nearly three million dollars below the next bidder, Vinnel-Dravo, a joint venture, Alhambra, Calif., and Pittsburg, Pa. at $16.6 million. S. S. Mullen Co., Seattle, bid $16,671,437. The section of highway is near the Utah-Arizona border and will, when completed e-liminat.9 e-liminat.9 the dangerous "Utah Hill" which is one of the most hazardous stretches of highway high-way in the intermountain area. ar-ea. The costs figures out to just slightly over $3.5 million per mile for the difficult construction. |
