Show At Restaurant Convention Bishop Bruce C. Atkin loses life in automobile crash in Ghicago Cedar City businessman, civic leader and church worker, work-er, Bruce Cox Atkin, 31, was killed Friday, May 22 in a car accident at Lake Bluff, 111. In the fatal accident,, his wife, Janet, was also injured suffering a severe whiplash, and was treated in the Lake Forest Hospital in Lake Bluff. Services for Atkin are slated today, Thursday, at 2 p.m. in the Cedar Stake Center. Friends may call at the Center j , BRUCE C. ATKIN from 11:30 a-m. until time of services. Burial will be in the jt. George cemetery. The funeral arrangements were delayed owing to Mrs. At-kin's At-kin's condition and scheduled today in order that she might be in attendance. The Atkins were in the Chicago Chi-cago area attending a restaur-ant restaur-ant owners convention. They were sightseeing in a rental car when another car crossed the median freeway barrier and struck the Atkin car nearly head on. At the time of his untimely death Atkin was serving as vice president of the Sugar Loaf Cafe, Inc. and as manager man-ager of the Cedar City Sugar Loaf Cafe. He is the immediate past president of the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce and was just recently sustained as bishop of the newly created Cedar 12th Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Lat-ter-Day Saints. Prior to his assignment as-signment as bishop he was a counselor in the Cedar Fifth Ward Bishopric. As an immediate past president pres-ident of the Chamber of Com merce he was also a board member this year. He has served a mission for the LDS Church in the Northwestern North-western States from 1959 through 1961. He served with the St. George unit of the Utah National Guard and was active in the Iron County Republican Re-publican Party. Atkin was a member of the Cedar City Lions Club and while in St. George was affiliated affil-iated with the Rotary Club. He graduated from Dixie High School, received an associate degree from Dixie Junior College Col-lege and his bachelors from Brigham Young University. He was born February 6, 1939, in St. George, a son of Rudger Clawson and Leona Cox Atkin. His father is currently cur-rently serving as president of the St. George LDS Temple. He married Janet LaDean Stoki Oct. 7, 1961 in the St. George Temple. He is survived by his widow, a son, Chris Rudger, and three daughters, Julie, Ann, Stephanie, Steph-anie, all of Cedar City. Also surviving are his parents, par-ents, St. George; four brothers broth-ers and a sister, Clayton, Lee, Sidney, Mrs. Harry ( LuJean ) Lundin, St. George and Ralph, , Salt Lake City. |
