Show Southern Utah State readies campus for annual Girls State scheduled June 6-13 torium will bo conducted by Mrs. Betty Calder, president of the Girls State Board and department president of the American Legion Auxiliary. Lynn Uibel, SUSC coordinator of Public Service; Jim Robinson, SUSC director Plans for the 24th annual session of the American Le-gion Le-gion Auxiliary Girls State to be held at Southern Utah State College June 6 through 13 have been announced by Mrs. Merle Dow, Girls State director. Citizens of Girls State are ieleoted at local levels principally princi-pally on the basis of character char-acter and leadership from students who have just completed com-pleted their junior year in high school. Mrs. Pow said the 1970 session ses-sion of Girls State has grown from an experimental conference confer-ence of 91 girls, helcf at Utah State University in 1947, to become the largest single extracurricular ex-tracurricular educational program pro-gram for high school students in the nation. This year's attendance at-tendance will make a total of 6000 girls in Utah who have participated in the program. City Symposium A City Symposium on June 8 will feature a panel discussion discus-sion by Cedar City officials on "Essential Facts of City Organization and Operation of City Government." Participants Partici-pants will be Mayor Whetten City Councilmen Robert C-Hansen, C-Hansen, Haze Hunter, Kerry Jones, Richard Stucki, and Lewis Webster. Others will be Mrs. Ellen Simkins, clerk-auditor; Mrs. Marilyn Prince, treasurer; R. L. Gardner, attorney, at-torney, Haldow E. Christensen, Christen-sen, judge, and C. E. Kirkham, Jr., chief of police. A special afternoon assembly will feature fea-ture a talk by Dean Smith. A County Symposium on June 9 will explore the "Essential "Es-sential Facts for County Organization Or-ganization and Operation of County Government." Panelists Panel-ists will be Iron County officials of-ficials Keith Smith, Ivan Matheson, and D. Robinson, commissioners; Clair Hulet, clerk-auditor; Eugene Robb, Graduation guest speaker at the conclusion of the week will b0 Dr. Koyclen C. Branh-waite, Branh-waite, president of SUSC. Mrs. Braitnwaite will also address a session of the conlerence and will be hostess at a dinner din-ner and tea du-ing the activities. activ-ities. To Speak at Devotional Devotional speakers for services each morning at 8:15 will be Robert B. White, Jr., SUSC Stake president; Joyce Wrigley, governor of Girls State; Reverend Grayson H. Gowen, pastor of Cedar City Presbyterian Church; Terri Larsen, senator to Girls Nation; Na-tion; Susan Taylor, senator to Girls Nation; Elihu Whatcott, Cedar Stake president; Julie Zufelt, secretary of state of Girls tatc; Dr. Joseph Felix, director of the SUSC Institute of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and Mrs. Juel Trowbridge, past director of Girls State. The opening session June 6 at 3 p.m. in the SUSC Audi- sheriff; Doe White, assessor, and R. L. Gardner, attorney. Assembly June 9 A special assembly on June 9 will be addressed by Don Carlson, personnel staffing specialist with the U. S. Civil Service, and 'sharon Robinson, instructor in the Stewardess Training Department at Dixie College. A state government session on June 10 will outline "Essential "Es-sential Facts for State Organization Organ-ization and Operation of State Government." Participating will be Clyde Miller, secretary secre-tary of state; Sherman Preeee, state auditor; G(olden Allen, state treasurer; Vernon Romney, Rom-ney, attorney general, and Allan Al-lan J. Crockett, chief justice of the Utah Supreme Court- The inaugural ceremony for the installation of new Girls State officers is planned for June 11 under the direction of Miss Wrigley. Mock Trial Slated A Judicial Session and Mock Trial on June 12 will involve state legislators as participants-. Those attending will be Senator Dixie Leavitt, Representatives J. Harold Mitchell and Sidney J. Atkin, Judge James McCune, and attorneys at-torneys Thorpe Waddingham I and J. Harlen Burns. I The Girls State Administrative Administra-tive Committee will arrive at SUSC June 5 in preparation for the week's activities. Committee Com-mittee members have met at the college several times during dur-ing the past year to plan for the event. Those involved in Girls State planning are Mrs. Dow, Mrs. Ruth Gregory and Mrs. Cherrie Morrie, assistant directors, Mrs. Jean West-wood, West-wood, Mrs. Barbara Swapp, and Mrs. Jacqueline Hyden, educational programs. Mrs. Maxine Bishop is secretary-treasurer secretary-treasurer of the group. J. Lynn Uibel is local coordinator of programs and arrangements. |
