Show Jaycees clinch National Little League first half title with comeback victory Jaycees, after suffering their second loss of the season, came back with an important 2 to 1 victory over Lions this week to capture the first half championship in the National Little League. The Jaycees put together three of their five hits in the first inning and pushed in both of their runs then held on for the victory. Steve Hair singled, Mike Hair lived on an error, Steve came on to score on a double by Kevin Averett and Mike scored what turned out to be tho winning run on a single by Mark Imlay. Winning pitcher was Mike Hair with Sage White suffering suffer-ing the loss. Lions were held to just three hits. Lions scored their single run in the third frame when Robert Pete doubled doub-led then came on to score on an error. Final standings, with one game not played, were as follows: fol-lows: Jaycees 6 2 .750 Lions 5 3 .025 Elks 4 3 .571 Arctic Circle 3 4 .423 Jones Motor 1 7 .125 The Elks handed Jaycees one of their two losses of the season 7-1 during the week however, to take the contest down to the wire. Jeff Paddock Pad-dock was the winning pitcher and he gave up only four hits to the Jaycees, all singles. Kevin Averett and Steve Hair shared mound duty for Jaycees i In the loss. Elks had a big sixth inning scoring 6 runs. They did it on only two hits, but took advantage of five walks and one error. Elks had only three hits in picking up the win. One of the most interesting . battles of the first half took place Tuesday evening when Lions defeated Arctic Circle 14 to 13 in a game that went into three extra innings. The clubs were all tied at 9 all at the end of regulation play. Both teams pushed in two runs in the seventh frame, neither scored in the eighth and Lions pushed in three in the ninth and Arctic Circle was held to just two. Lions had 10 hits in the contest, all singles but managed the victory. vic-tory. Jeff Jolley was the big gun for Arctic Circle. He belted five hits in five trips Including Includ-ing a double and a two run homer in the ninth frame. Fred Wright of AC scored five runs in the contest and collected col-lected three hits, but it was all in vain. Fred Wright and Brad Blackner shared mound duty for the lossers. Lions sent Gary Webb, Mike Quin-tanilla Quin-tanilla and Mike Cardon to the mound with Cardon taking tak-ing the win. In other action of the week Jones Motor suffered a pair of loases falling to Arctic Circle Cir-cle 13 to 9 and to Elks 11 to 0. Arctic Circle put together a big second inning to past their victory scoring six runs in the frame. They collected five of their seven hits, had two walks and took advantage of a pair of errors in the inning to take a lead they never re-linquised. re-linquised. I Jeff Hunter was the winning win-ning pitcher for Elks as he threw ' a three hitter in collecting col-lecting his 11-0 shutout. He also doubled in he contest. Other big hitters were Kevin Schoppman who collected 3 for 4 at the plate including a double and Bobby Piatt who belted a two run homer in the third. Boyd Cowley suffered the loss for Jones Motor. |
