Show Business activities increased by 11.8 percent in Cedar City last year of ibusiness activity for these' local units during the period 1965 through 1971. These data were derived from reported sales of goods and services subject to Utah's sales and use tax laws. This tax applies ap-plies to most retail sales of tangible personal property, meals, admissions, and many services, such as utility charges, char-ges, repairs, hotel and motel bills, laundry, cleaning, etc. Business activity rose by 11.8 in Cedar City during 1971, according to a study prepared pre-pared by Utah Foundation, the private tax research organization. or-ganization. For the state as a whole, the total volume of business activity increased by 15 last year. The F o u n dation report shows that gross sales, as measured by local sales tax collections, amounted to $32,-973,000 $32,-973,000 in Cedar City during 1971. This compares with total business activity of $29,496,-000 $29,496,-000 in 1970 and $13,12;0C0-lff 1965. An important factor in the rise in sales volumes during recent years has been the continuing con-tinuing high level of inflation. infla-tion. The study shows that throughout Utah gross sales nearly doubled between 1960 and 1971, and the increase between be-tween 1965 and 1971 amounted amount-ed to 60. When these figures are adjusted for changes in consumer price levels, however, how-ever, the increase between I960 I9-60 and 1971 amounts to 45 and the rise between 1965 and 1971 is 25. Foundation analysts point out that Salt Lake County accounts ac-counts for more than one half the total sales volume in Utah. Salt Lake City proper .s responsible for about 55 of the County total and 30 of the total sales for the state. During Tecent years, there has been a shift of business away from the central business busi-ness districts to suburban shopping centers. In 1971, for example, business volume in Sailt Lake Oity grew by only 9.7, compared with a 15.0 growth rate for the entire state. During the period between be-tween 1965 and 1971, the business busi-ness growth rate was only about two-thirds of that for the state as a whole. Business volume in suburban Murray, n the other hand, Jumped 57- in 1971 and has tripled since 1965.
