Show Grandson o! Cedar woman wounded, praised by comrade Mrs. Mary P. (Mame) Bauer of Cedar City was recently informed in-formed that her grandson, Ken Bauer, had been wounded in action in Vietnam. The young soldier is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyne Bauer of Ely, Nevada, former residents of Cedar City. Young Bauer was hit while loading a wounded comrade into an "medevac chopper" an evacuation helicopter, and was credited by the comrade for saving his life, in a letter addressed ad-dressed to Ken's parents. Last word received from the two soldiers indicated they were both in hofsitals in Japan Ja-pan and expecting to return to the states soon. In the letter the wounded companion was highly complimentary compli-mentary of young Bauer, not only for his bravery and coolness cool-ness under fire, but also for his advice, encouragement and understanding of not only this particular iuiiLer, but all other young men in his unit. In the letter the young soldier, sol-dier, among other things had this to say about Bauer: i ". . . . no matter how rough things got Ken was always calm about it and that sorta helped when we got into a . few tight spots. When I first got into the Company I was put into Ken's position nearly every night as he was our machine-gunner and I always al-ways wanted to be around him because he knew what the score was and we could always al-ways depend on him to give us the maximum fire support with his M-60 when we were in a fire-fight, he was usually usual-ly the only one who put any effective fire on the dinks when we were hit, and as long as there was ammo Ken was steadily putting out the lead and I know of at least three incidents where if Ken hadn't had the nerve to stand up and open fire to give cover for some of our men who were pinned down then I know at least half of "our" platoon that would either be dead or still lying in a rice paddy waiting for help. "The reason I'm telling you this, Mr. and Mrs. Bauer, is because I want you to know just how I and many more of the men who were with him in Vietnam feel about him he's a great guy and a tough one and he has a head to really think! I owe him a lot -possibly my life and I know Ken would never tell you this." |
