Show CSU Thunderbirds Fall Flat in Top Of The Nation Tourney. Lose Three Top of the Nation tournament at Alamosa, Colo, this past week end was not the College of Southern South-ern Utah Thunderbirds cup of tea. The T-Birds went into the tournament tour-nament with a five win and four loss record. They came out of it with three straight losses on their record, finished eighth place in an eight team tournament, set a new low scoring mark since enteing four year competition, and gae host Adams State College Col-lege their first victory of the current cur-rent season. Coach Boyd Adams and his crew had troubles getting to the tournament when one of the CSU station wagons burned up fol- advantage. With several court errors Minot managed to make up that seven points and take a two point lead. CSU came back again to take the lead and held a three point margin with just 30 seconds to play. A foul and another court error by the T-Birds in bringing the ball into play resulted in three points for the Illinois crew and they tied the game and forced it to overtime. In "the overtime period Minot I jumped out to a five point lead then coasted on for the victory. In Thursday's action against Adams State, the hot hands of Yeates proved too much for the T-Birds. Yeates hit 18 fieldgoals, i.it t,"n Ipso than thf ontira P.IT squad, and tanked 12 of 13 from the free throw line for a tournament tour-nament record in a single game. Yeates hit early in the game to move the Indians of Adams State out in front, and after taking a six point lead at 12 to 6, they were never threatened. CSU poured in 81 points but could not match the pace to the host club. Loading scorer for the T-Birds was center John Carey with 26 points, but he had h s troubles hitting early in the game. Fred E ;plin and a reserve guard, Bruce Bradley, each hit for 10 points and Cuff and West, who were high for the T-Eirds the previous evening, had to be content with th-co po'nts each. Moving into the consolation round of play the T-Birds took on Minot State of Illinois but lost in an overtime game by a score of 92 to 88. That brought them to Thursday's Thurs-day's action against host Adams State College for seventh and eighth place in the tournament. Led by Melvin Yeates, a 6-0 guard for Adams Stae who set a new Top of the Nation scoring record with 48 points, the T-Brds finished up in last place losing 106 to 81. Against Minot State a pair of guards, Bob Cuff and Paul West, both products of Murray High School, came to life for the T-Birds, leading the scoring. West had 23 points and Cuff added 17.
