Applegate, longtime long-time Forest Service employee, retired from the Dixie National Forest on April 30, according to an announcement by Jack B. Shumate, Forest Supervisor. Mr. Applegate began work on the Dixie in 1931 as a supervisor sup-ervisor of Civilian Conservation Conserva-tion Corps and Public Works crews building roads, bridges, fences, buildings, campgrounds, camp-grounds, and other Forest improvements. im-provements. For many years he has been in charge of the construction and maintenance of Forest roads and bridges, and a significant portion of the present road network on the Dixie was constructed by Mr. Applegate and his crews. He has received special recognition recog-nition a number of times for the high standard of work accomplished. ac-complished. At a recent retirement party given by fellow employees, Mr. Applegate stated that he and his wife Kathryn planned to remain in Cedar City where they have a home and where he plans to embark on a new career, that of gentleman ' farmer. |
