Show Fish arid Game Makes Repor t On Major Waters foir Opening Day Above average fishing conditions con-ditions and prospects are expected ex-pected for the early portion of the 19G8 season. A heavy spring runoff promises to replenish re-plenish reservoirs which were In sortie cases drastically drawn down in fall, 1967. In many waters "reserve" quotas of catchable-sized rainbow will be stocked to partially fill the void created by this fluctuation, fluct-uation, Access will probably be good for all major lakes and reservoirs res-ervoirs In the southern region. reg-ion. Streams, however, ar expected ex-pected to be high and muddy in some cases. Summerkills were experienced experien-ced on several lakes and reservoirs res-ervoirs during 1967 due to rapid rap-id and heavy drawndown of i water levels. Low fall water i levels may also produce win- terkills in some of the higher j waters. Suspect waters are , being surveyed this week as I they become accessible. I Following is the Fish and t Game report on major waters I in this area: vllle City will remain open to year-around fishing. Puffer'g Lake: This lake and LaBaron Reservoir are the only lakes o n Beaver Mountain which may not be accessible for the opening. Rainbows 10-12 10-12 in. will provide fast fishing. A few larger fish are present; good fly fishing. GARFIELD COUNTY: Panguitch Lake: Rainbows will b.3 slightly smaller this opening than a year ago. Year, ling fish should be about 10 in. and two year fish about 12-14 in. Excellent water conditions con-ditions for the past few years have helped limit the effect of trash fish competition. The rate of success should continue con-tinue as one of the highest in the State. Pine Lake: This is a catch-able catch-able fishery primarily, but with good carryover of rainbows rain-bows as well as brook trout from fingerling plants. Pressure Pres-sure is very high and success suc-cess moderate; rated "good" for the opening. IRON COUNTY BEAVER COUNTY Minersvillo Reservoir: Chem-ically Chem-ically treated for rough fish removal in fall, 1967, Miners-ville Miners-ville will be closed to angling during 1968. The Beaver River from Beaver City to Miners- Newcastle Reservoir: Irrigation Irriga-tion use was heavy on Newcastle New-castle in 1967. The low fall water level last year will affect af-fect fishing success on the o-pening. o-pening. Reserve catchables have been stocked; however, fishing will probably not be as fast on the opening as last year. Fish will be from 10-15 inches with few larger fish. Paragonah Reservoir: Rainbow Rain-bow in. Paragonah will be similar sim-ilar in size to those in Newcastle, New-castle, but in much better condition. Again, supplemental supplement-al catchable plants have been made to buffer effects of heavy hea-vy drawdown. Lunker rainbows rain-bows are common here on the opening. Rate of success should be good. Yankee Meadow Reservoir: Brook trout and rainbows should provide good success on the opening. Brookies will be from 10-14" with a few to 2 pounds. Rainbows will be from 11-15". This is a heavily fished spot on the opening. KANE COUNTY Navcjo Lake: Winterkill occurs oc-curs yearly here to some extent. ex-tent. Brook trout fare better than rainbows and provide some return from fingerling plants. Rainbow catchables provide most Of the fishing, which is rated fair to good, improving as the season progresses. pro-gresses. Fish will be 9-11" on the opening. Duck Creek Springs: A very popular fishery, this lake require re-quire heavy stocking with catchables. "Lunker" German brown, brook and rainbows provide incentive to anglers. The rate of success is usually fair on the opening with heavy pressure. Aspen-Mirror Lake: Similar to Duck Creek, this nearby i lake will also receive heavy pressure on the opening. Good campgrounds and scenic surroundings sur-roundings make these lakes even more popular. Otter Creek Reservoir: High water levels will probably prohibit pro-hibit chemical rehabilitation of this water in 1968. Infestation Infesta-tion of Utah chubs has reduced fishing success to a low level. Otter Creek is now open to year-round fishing. WASHINGTON COUNTY Baker Reservoir: Natural reproduction re-production of German brown trout occurs here combined with rainbow fingerling and catchable plants. Success on the opening should be fair to good, with heavy pressure. Brown trout to 5 pounds, one taken occasionally; rainbows from 11" up. Upper Enterprise Reservoir: A heavy summerkill occured in the summer of 1967 taking most of the rainbows planted as fingerling that spring. Few of the larger fish were affected. affect-ed. As a result, fishing will be slower on the opening this year than in 1967, but with larger fish. Catches should be good with frequent limits of 12-15" trout in excellent condition. con-dition. Lower Enterprise Reservoir: Rainbows from 10-14" expected. expect-ed. Rate of success should be higher than Upper Enterprise on the opening. Flash floods and heavy drawdown which often affect these waters were not a problem in 1967, so turbidity tur-bidity and water levels should be optimum this year. Pine Valley Reservoir: This is primarily a put-and-take catchable fishery with very heavy pressure. Nonresident anglers exert heavy use. Natural Na-tural reproduction of brook trout adds variety to the catch. Rate of success moderate. Kolob Reservoir: Excellent water conditions continue and stocking rates have been high. Rainbow, brook trout will be 8-10", 2 year olds about 12". Yearling rainbow will be a-bout a-bout 12" and in excellent condition. con-dition. Access may be limited to the southern route to the reservoir on the opening. late of success should be good. |
