'W.M READING PROGRAM at Parowan Elementary was undertaken by, the above faculty members: standing, Boyd Robinson, Chester Benson and Richard Dotson, principal, and seated, seat-ed, Roma Jensen, Helen Stones and Miriam Lister. Parowan Teachers Conducting Research A group of teachers from the Parowan Elementary School have been investigating investigat-ing the current research and materials available in the area of reading in the elementary elem-entary school. Many new programs were studied, and the merits of each were compared with the individualized reading program pro-gram as it now exists in the school. A number of resource people, peo-ple, specialists in the area of reading, visited the school and gave the teachers additional addi-tional help in evaluating the various methods and materials. mater-ials. As a result of the study, a series of tests were given to all boys and girls from third to sixth grade. The tests iden- tified some problem areas and pointed out areas where little or no problem existed. From this analysis, five groups were formed which placed students in areas of weakness regardless of grade level. This became a non-graded non-graded attempt in team-teaching in the language arts area. The materials studied suggested sug-gested methods which were used with these groups to help students overcome specific spec-ific reading difficulties. To overcome these problems, teachers used the following methods: creative writing, reading in context, phonetic approach to oral reading, research re-search under teacher guidance, guid-ance, and enrichment through self commitment, also under the guidance of the teacher. In addition, as a result of this non-graded effort, it was a relatively simple task to involve in-volve all students in a common com-mon reading experience. Students Stu-dents from third to sixth grade, under th.e guidance of the classroom teacher, listened listen-ed to and helped younger students stu-dents while they read orally. Both readers and listeners gained from this experience. |
