Show I Flyers Dovn Cedar in 2nd Encounter Dixie Flyers of St. George, defending de-fending division, regional, and State Class B champions of 195S, took another step in the direction direc-tion of repeating their 1958 fete, by defeating the Cedar City Red-men Red-men 51 to 46 Friday evening at the College of Southern Utah fieldhouse in Cedar City. The win for the Flyers gave them the division championship, a shot at the Regional crown and, In addition, gave them a berth in the state Class B tournament. The loss for the Redmen pushed them Into third place in the division di-vision battle, behind the Hurricane Hurri-cane Tigers. No Pushover The win for the Flyers did not come easy. Coach Bruce Decker's Redmen put up a good fight for three quarters, before succumbing succumb-ing to the height and power of the visitors. Dixie went out ahead early In the game, moving to a 9 to C first quarter lead. Defensive action was outstanding outstand-ing in the first period with Weston Wes-ton Kitchen turning in an excellent excel-lent Job of defense on the Flyers' leading scorer, Smith. Dixie concentrated con-centrated their defensive efforts on Kitchen and Eric Gardner, the two leading scorers for the Redmen. Smith was given the responsibility re-sponsibility of holding down Gardner, who picked up four points In the first quarter. In the second quarter of play Sam Chamberlain came Into the game for the Redmen and In addition ad-dition to adding to the scoring he worked a series of screens against Smith of Dixie leaving Gardner free for some long shooting. shoot-ing. Gardner came through, scoring scor-ing 11 points, h'a final basket, a 45-footer from Just across the center line with the halftlme gun sounding while the ball was In flight. The basket gave the Redrrfrn a 21 to 20 halftlme lead, the first lead they had held In the game. Slow Start Cedar dropped behind in the early minutes of the second half but tied it up at 23-all, 26-alI, moved out in front 28 to 26 with a basket by Gardner, midway in the period, the largest lead the Redmed gained all evening. Dixie Dix-ie tied it up at 28-all, Cedar moved mov-ed to 30 to 28 and the visitors tied It at 30-all as th period ended. Kitchen, who was defensed throughout the first three quarters quar-ters of play, had only five points at the three-quarter mark, but had nevertheless, turned in an excellent defensive game, and was called to the bench playing with four fouls. Dixie took the opening tip in the fourth period, and on a well executed play, Smith moved down the center for a lay-up. He was fouled in the process, hit the basket and added the extra point to give the Flyers a three point lead, with less than 10 seconds of the quarter elapsed. Sheldon Bowler shared rebounding honors hon-ors with Kitchen for the Redman and Douglas Haycock, who played play-ed the entire game, was a strong defensive threat for Cedar. Phil Yergensen, who started at gve.rd, played the first quarter before he was relieved by Chamberlain. Chamberlain teamed with Gardner Gard-ner to supply the malor scoring. Gardner hit for 21 and Chamberlain Chamber-lain added 11 points, both hitting hit-ting well from well outside.
