Show Iron County Vater Users Hear Report On Crucial Water Development Plans Members of the Iron County Water Users Association assembled in an annual meeting were told by Jay Bingham, Bing-ham, executive director of the Utah Water and Power Board, that the Kolob project is possibly the best source of much needed water for Cedar City and Iron County and pointed out the possibility of t?Hng water from Cascade Springs in connectiong with the Navajo Lake project to divert water from this area. Meeting was held at El Es-calante Es-calante Hotel Thursday evening, Feb. 19. Caine, president) of the Utah State Water Users Association, expressed at the meeting , a need to conserve every drop of water to make it available for the use of our rapidly ra-pidly expanding population. He went so far as to state that wa-j ter is much more Important than roads isasmuch as It Is necessary neces-sary for our survival. j Mr. Bingham in referring to the Kolob project Indicated that at the present time the Kolob Reservoir has a capacity of 5,300 acre feet of water and that a conservative estimate would be that only about 3,000 acre-feet can be depended upon annually as far as the present drainage area is concerned. He Indicated that by building a canal from Crystal Creek, however, how-ever, about 5,000 acre-feet per year could be diverted to the reservoir to bring the supply to 8,000 acre-feet. "This supply has already been filed on by the Utah Water and Power Board for use In Cedar City and Iron County," he Indicated. Indi-cated. Until the Dixie project Is com-pleted com-pleted Iron County has a commitment com-mitment for only 25 or 40 of the Kolob Reservoir supply. The proposed power plant could be tued to help provide revenue 4 pay far the project. Thomas Jensen, secretary of he Utah Water Users Assn., reported re-ported on a state-wide survey that Indicated that there were approximately 573 storage sites that could be utilized in the state and in addition the report indicated that here were over 400 miles of canals that needed to be built, re built or lined. Not enough of this work is being done to completely utilize the water supply of the state, he said. It was pointed out by Mr. Blng-hT Blng-hT tht fu every four acre-feet of water diverted in the state only one acre-foot is actually used for crop growth, pointing up the need by irrigation people to more fully utilize their water supply.
