Show Cedar High School Hoop Squad Wins Over Dixie Flyers Cedar High School Redmen opened their defense of the Dixie Division basketball crown Thursday Thurs-day successfully as they staved off the determined crew from Dixie in the final quarter of play to win 46 to 41. After leading by as much as 12 points early in the game, the Redmen hit a cold streak from the field, and an even worst percentage from the foul line In the final quarter of play and the Flyers came within one point on two occasions to give the Redmen a real battle for the victory. Neither of the two teams played play-ed consistant ball In the traditional tradi-tional contest that had all the elements of the first league game of the. season. Bad passes and failure to control the ball were evident throughout the contest. The Redmen of Coach Bruce Decker, however, controlled the rebounding and as a result were able to make mistakes and still come up with the victory. The Rtlmer. picked off a total of 54 rebounds, 27 offensive and 27 defensive. The Flyers of Dixie had 39 rebounds, 19 of the offensive of-fensive and 21 defensive. Leading rebounder and leading scorer In the contest was Neil I Roberts of the Redmen. He collected col-lected 20 rebounds split evenly offensively and defensively and he hit for 22 points. Nell, as were the rest of the Redmen, was extremely cold at the foul line. The Redmen picking pick-ing up fouls in the last quarter as the Flyers were pressing, missed 10 consecutive shots from the foul line and ended the evening with only 10 in 26 attempts. at-tempts. They were better from the field, hitting at a 50 percent clip In the first half and 39 percent per-cent in the second for a game average av-erage of 41.9 percent. The Flyers shot at a 32.7 percent clip for the evening, but it was in the first half when the Redmen were building up their lead that the Flyers were really cold. They hit only five from the field in the first half on 28 attempts for a 17 precent. Second half they hit 50 percent and their seven for 12 from the foul line was much higher. N. Roberts opened the scoring in the first half of play on a layup along the baseline and Kent Smith followed with a Jumper Jum-per and a foul pitch to give the Redmen an early 5 to 0 lead. Blake of Dixie was first to score after four minutes of play with one from the field and Booth added two foul pitches in the first quarter for only four points. The Redmen led at the end of the period by 11 to 5 with Smith hitting hit-ting five points. N. Roberts hit for nine points In the second quarter and led the Redmen to a 23 to 14 halftime lead. Bad passes on the part of both teams held the scoring down somewhat and the Flyers put on j a press led by Wilson that1 seemed to give the Redmen real j trouble. 1 As the second half of play opened the Flyers put on their best performance of the game with Wilson, on the give and go situation, drove for two quick layups and Blake hit from in , close to put the Flyers back in contention at 20 to 24. Three quick fieldgoals by N. Roberts, Donnie Roberts and Paul Stokes plus another foul by N. Roberts boosted the Redmen out in front by 11 points midway in the period. At that point Blake, the big center for Dixie fouled out of the game. Loss of Blake seemed to spur the Flyers more than hamper them and they bounced back to move within five points at the end of the third period, 36 to 31. Booth hit a hooker from 10 feet to open the fourth period and Wilson, on a steal, scored to put the score at 35 to 36 with less than a minute gone in the fourth period. N. Roberts finally hit from the field then missed a foul and on a follow fol-low up tipped one in to put the Redmen out by 42 to 37. D.
