Show LIVING IN THE ESCALANTE VALLEY Large Crowd Helps Scouts Celebrate Approximately 90 people attended at-tended the Blue and Gold banquet ban-quet sponsored by the Cub Scouts on Feb. 28 In celebration celebra-tion of the 43th anniversary of the scouting movement In the United States. District Scouting Director Joseph Barney of Cedar City was a special guest for the occasion. The table decorations which were made by the various Cub Scout Dens carried out the blue and gold theme as did the birthday cakes which were made and decorated by Doris Pederson, Corinne Applegate and Belle IIu-let. IIu-let. The program for the evening eve-ning was presented by the cubs and their leaders and featured songs and skits. Highlight of the program was the ceremony presenting pre-senting Webelos badges to the members of the Webelos den. Unfortunately Hal Tucker of Beryl who is the leader of the Webelos, was too ill to attend, and one of the cubs, Steven Applegate, Ap-plegate, was also unable to re ceive his badge at the ceremony because of Illness. During the evening Mrs. Jimmie Margie was introduced to the group. Mrs. Margie Is the Den Mother of the newly organized Den 4 which will meet at her home at the Zuckerman's Enterprise Farms. Den l was awarded the honor flag for parent participation for this month. The Cub Scout program pro-gram for March was also outlined out-lined by Mrs. Doris Pederson and Mrs. Lu Knell who served as the Ideas committee for the month. The study material for March Is on Alaska and many Interesting projects are planned. Modena Woman Is Named Director i At Las Vegas Meet M . EDITH FORCE I At the March 2 meeting held at the El Cortez Hotel in Las Vegas, Nev. Mrs. Edith Force of Modena was named district director di-rector of the Business and Professional Pro-fessional Women of the Southern Nevada District. Mrs. Force is j affiliated with the Caliente, Nev. chapter and has been an enthusiastic enthus-iastic worker with the organiza-I organiza-I tion for a number of years. The Southern Nevada District is com-posed com-posed of elgh clubs, Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Vegas Valley, Boulder City, Henderson, Tono-pah, Tono-pah, Ploche and Caliente. Berna. dette LeBorday of Las Vegas was named assistant director; Marion Mar-ion Elliott. North Las Vegas, as treasurer; Louise Smith of North Las Vegas, secretary, and the corresponding secretary and nine standing committeemen are to be appointed by Mrs. Force. It is very unusual for such recognition rec-ognition to come to a member of one of our smaller communt-ties communt-ties but Mrs. Force Is we'l known for her energy and enthusiasm and her devotion to the BPW work. Lions Club Hears Driver Safety Talk At the regular meeting of the Escalante Valley Lions Club State Highway Sgt. Reed showed a movie and discussed driver safety programs. This program was In keeping with the various prolects of the club's safety committee com-mittee which has been very active. ac-tive. Dinner for the evening was srved by Mrs. Austin Moyle. Mrs. Russell Chrlstensen and Mrs. Dewey Godard. Alaska Resident Shows Films Tuesday evening at 7:30 in the Modena recreation hall a group of approximately 45 residents of Modena and the surrounding area enjoyed pictures and a talk presented by Howard Huling of Alflffla If- IT..1I ..... iiuiiiiK, a uioiiier oi Mrs. Alfred Force of Modena. and his wife Vivian, who will be remembered re-membered by local peonle as the sister of former resident Law-rence Law-rence Hurt are visiting at the Alfred Force home for a few days. We also plar,. nod for the sponsors' party. Wr played vip-vop and crows crane Diane Wood gave a report on dairv facts. JoAnn DelVecrh-lo DelVecrh-lo gave a report on hawks and rodents. Then we sang The Pur-pie Pur-pie Cow. Escalante Valley Lions Plan Dance The Escalante Valley Lions 'Club Is Issuing an Invitation to everyone In the surrounding area to attend Its big dance which is scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 8 at 9 In the Modena recreation hall. Through the cooperation of local businessmen and Individ-uals Individ-uals and a large number of merchants mer-chants of Cedar City a wide variety var-iety of valuable merchandise has been collected by the club. Some of these Items will be presented present-ed as door prizes, some as spot prizes, and some will be used In a "surprise package" auction. Prizes . will be awarded to the smallest man present and also to the largest man. (Scales will be available if needed). The balance bal-ance of the merchandise will he I auctioned off to the highest bid-dor. bid-dor. Dance tickets are $1.25 per couple and will be available at Hunter Hardware and Hamilton Sporting Goods in Cedar City, or they may be purchased at the Herb Knell orchestra. The dance Is sponsored by the Community Betterment Commit-tee Commit-tee of the Lions Club and all funds raised will be used for community projects. The com- mlttee is composed of Jark Moyle, Alex Wood, Russell Chris-tensen Chris-tensen and James Margie. Tony Alberto will be in charge of the refreshments, which will include coffee, pop, hamburgers and hot dogs. The Campfire Girls are planning to sell cake and candy at the dance to help raise money for their uniforms. Modena Residents Enjoying Telephones Last Thursday final Install i-tlons i-tlons were completed In the new telephone system to serve the community of Modena and serv-ice serv-ice was begun. Residents report that the service is very satisfactory, satisfac-tory, and they are enjoying the convenience of a system made possible through the joint efforts of the men of the community who erected the telephone lines, and the South Central Utah Tele-phone Tele-phone Association. Farewell Party Held for Specialist A progressive dinner party was held In Modena last week honoring hon-oring Mr. and Mrs. Kent Taylor and daughter, who have been In the Modena area for come time while Mr. Taylor has been do-'ng do-'ng some experimental work for the U S U. The party began at the home of Mrs. B. J. Lund where the group enjoyed tomato juice cocktail and potato chips ind dip. The main course was erved by Mrs. Richard Thorley I it her home and later the group moved on to the George Eizman's 'or dessert and games. Those at-'nnding at-'nnding besides the Taylors were Mr. and Mrj. Clayton Bracken Mr. and Mrs. Richard Thorley, Mr. and Mrs. Alton Pendleton, Mr. and Mr. Clpnrot Flyman Mrs. B. J. Lund and Mrs. Zilli Hills. News in Brief Mrs. Edna Thorley has been teaching the first and second grades at the Escalante Valley School this week owing to the illness of Miss Carma Taylor. School will be out Thursday and Friday of this week for spring vacation. The Escalante Valley Electric Assn. has taken delivery on the new Dodge Pickup ordered recently re-cently from Ltint Motor Co. of Cedar City on the basis of competitive com-petitive bi'ls. Bryner Wood, chairman of the Coordinating Council's television committee, reports that at thei present time the television tow-1 or which was beamed into this) ,1 I valley is turned off for repairs. Principal Don Applegate of the elementary school attended a principay's training session in Cedar City Tuesday night. Roca Romero, who has been confined con-fined to the St. Marks Hospital for a number of weeks, is reported report-ed to be continuing to improve. The doctor Is reported to be planning major surgery as soon as Mrs. Romero is built up sufficiently. suffi-ciently. j Mrs. Trudy Hirschl of Rock-ville,, Rock-ville,, mother of Mrs. Marion Barlow, is staying with the Ber-nus Ber-nus Barlows for an indefinite period following her daughter's release from the Iron County Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. George Schaefer of Las Vegas are visiting at the Charles Bosshardt home. Mr.i Schaefer is a brother of Mrs. Bosshardt. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Gardner, are in California where they plan to visit with their daughter Ja-; nice, her husband Larry Hester and their grandson Steven. Thoy are then planning a trip Into the Imperial Villey to see old friends. j Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell White and children of Milford are i.i Modena for a short visit with I Mrs. White's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Force. Report from Our Servicemen Mr. and Mrs. Tom Holland received re-ceived a week end visit from their son Carl who Is with the Navy aboard the USS Gregory. Carl expects to go to Australia on his next cruise. Tommy Holland, who recently re-enlisted in the Navy Is currently cur-rently stationed on Treasure Island, Is-land, where he is attending an electronics school. MLFN Alma Bracken, who Is stationed aboard the USS Bryce Canyon at Manilla Bay in the Philippine Islands expects to be back in the United States by April 1. Pfc. 2nd Class Eldon Bracken who is with the Army in Porland, Ore., is expecting to be transferred trans-ferred to Ft. Lawton. His wife Bobbie is planning to return to Bakersfield, Calif, temporarily. Mr. and Mrs. John McGarry welcomed a phone call Sunday from their son Johnny, who is stationed with the U. S. Armv at San Pedro, Calif. Owing to the interest express-' ed by many valley residents it Is planned to make this report a regular feature of the Escalante Valley news.
