Show Navajo Lake Project To Reduce Trout Loss Continued An experiment, designed to re-luce re-luce the winter loss of trout through suffocation, is continuing continu-ing at Navajo Lake, the Utah Department of Fish and Game noted. The lake, situated in the high country above Cedar City, is a well known and highly productive produc-tive fishing water often subject to heavy losses of trout during late winter periods when the oxygen content in the water becomes be-comes extremely low. The Cedar City Wildlife Fed. eratlon, aided by the department, Is attempting to reduce this loss by pumping air from a compres- m tHTvrkiirrti nnrt rtra tH ni np which lays along the floor of the lake. The pipe was Installed during late fall before the lake froze up. The federation Init'ated the project during the 1956-57 winter and all indications pointed to a successful operation. This year's project is the second year of the operation. This is the first year the Fish and Game has participated In the program. The compressor was recently started up and is now forcing air into the lake on a 24-hour bsis. Federation members are attending the eomnressor. Spokesmen said water samples are being taken to determine the oxveen increase as the operation continues. The experiment will be watched with interest, with the final results to be determined when the Ice cWrs from the lake in later months. |
