Show Redmen Emerge Victors in First Half Play Undisputed first place In the Region Ten baseball race belonged belong-ed to the Cedar City Redmen following fol-lowing a contest Friday afternoon after-noon against the Hurricane Tigers. Tig-ers. The Redmen, behind the strong pitching of Steve Cahoon, posted a 4 to 1 victory. Cahoon allowed only two scattered scat-tered hits in the game, gave up a single walk and struck out ten of the Tigers. Lee of Hurricane was the loser in the contest and he was relieved in the sixth by Stout. They allowed only seven hits and collected as many strikeouts against the Redmen. Hurricane scored first, pushing In their single tally In the top half of the first inning. Two bunts with subsequent wild throws to first put two men on base and on a drive to second base a run crossed the plate, without the benefit of a hit. The Redmen went down In the first two innings but came back with a pair of runs In the third to take over the lead 2 to 1. Neil Roberts started off the inning with a single. Cahoon doubled to score Roberts and a wild throw by the catcher allowed Cahoon to score as well. ' It was not until the sixth that the Redmen scored again. Cahoon led off with a double and Mike Carter backed up that with a belt over the left field fence for a two-run homer to end the scoring at 4 to 1. Cahoon was the top hitter with three hits In three trips, including includ-ing two doubles. Carter homered for the only other extra base hit. Roberts hit two for three and Kent Smith singled for the only other hit for the Redmen. The win ended the first half of play for the Redmen with a three win and no loss record. Friday afternoon the second half of play will get under way as the Redmen travel to Enterprise Enter-prise to meet the Wolves. .In the opening contest of the season the Redmen downed Enterprise 39 to 1 and will be expected to win this contest as well. In subsequent games they will meet Parowan at Cedar and will travel to Hurricane to meet the Tigers In the final contest of the regular league season according to Coach Bruce Decker. |
