Show Atomic Energy Commission Renews Contract For Research at College oi Southern Utah Announcement has been made at College of Southern Utah of the renewal of contract from the Atomic Energy Commission for continued work by Dr. Wesley P. Larsen on 'The effects of radiation ra-diation on the embryos of invet-ebrate invet-ebrate animals." Dr. Larsen has pursued his studies In this field for three years and was instrumental instru-mental in obtaining a Cobalt-60 irradiator for the college last year. His research at the present time involves the study of organ cultures and their response to radiation under the conditions of anoxia, hypoxia, aging, low temperature, tem-perature, and metabolic inhibition. inhibi-tion. He is also doing work in volving testing of the effectiveness effective-ness of radiation protecting chemicals on the curvival or organ or-gan cultures. Dr. Larsr-i spent two months at Eniwetok Atoll in the Pacific last summer carrying on special work for the ABC. He is a member of the biology department at CSV and conducts his research in addition to teaching teach-ing classes and directing student laboratory work. He is active In community affairs and has taught evening classes in the civil ci-vil defense medical self help program. pro-gram. He is health and sanitation sanita-tion chairman for the Cedar City Coordinating Council and has lectured before many local clubs and organizations. Papers and treatises by Dr. Larsen have been widely pub-listed pub-listed in scientific books and magazines. Some of the more recent re-cent publications include "Cell proliferation in an insect tissue culture" in the February issue of Lite Sciences, and "Survival of isolated embryonic heart fragments frag-ments following treatment with some radiation protecting chemicals," chem-icals," to appear in the June issue is-sue of Life Sciences. Dr. Larsen has also appeared before a number of scientific groups as a lecturer and resource authority. He will present a paper pa-per on "Some characteristics of organ cultures" at the June 15-18 15-18 meeting of the Entomological Society of America in Long Beach, Calif. In August he will speak at meetings of the American Ameri-can Institute of Biological Science Sci-ence at Boulder, Colo., on "Radiation "Radia-tion protection given by cystea-mlne cystea-mlne to isolated insect heart fragments." |
