Complete list of polling places may be found in the official Notice of Bond Election on page B6 of this issue of the Iron County Record. Also listed in the notice of bond election publication are qualification for voters. No person shall be permitted tn vote unless he is a registered voter residing in teh school representative precinct in which he offers to vote, and shall have paid a property tax In the Iron County School District. The election is to approve the Issuance of bonds In the amount of $2,900,000 for construction of needed school buildings, from the elementary level through high school. It is pointed out that a tax levy of an average of 5.2 mills over the 15 year duration of the bond issue, will be necessary. neces-sary. At the present time the levy le-vy for capital outlay is 10 mills, which if retained, would cover the bond Issue and provide funds for additional building needs. Urgent Needs Most urgent of the building needs at the present time Is a new high school at Cedar City, with most everyone convinced ci' the need for additional facilities, an immediate need that will grow more acute each year as increased enrollment in lower divisions di-visions advance to high school level. Only controversy over the high school building needs seems to ''enter around whether or not a complete new school plant be provided or expansion of the present plant be undertaken. Lack of space at the present site has convinced the school board that a new school campus should be provided, although some arguments ar-guments are still current that expansion is all that is necessary. neces-sary. This argument is vigorously vigorous-ly advanced by Herman E. Bay-les Bay-les of Parowan In a letter to the editor appearing in this issue of the Iron County Record. It is difficult dif-ficult . to determine how much support those who oppose building build-ing a new school will be able to muster on election day. Parowon Elementary Next to the Cedar City High School, the greatest need in the school district seems to be that for a new elementary school In Parowan, plans foT which are already prepared, and which undoubtedly un-doubtedly will be started In the near future If bonds are ap-approved. ap-approved. Also included in the building program is expansion of facilities at the Parowan High School. Not projected in the bond issue Is the new south Elementary School In Cedar City, since funds are available for completion of this structure. The same situation situa-tion prevails in the need for remodeling re-modeling of the present auditorium audi-torium and administration building build-ing for utilization of the facilities facili-ties for needed administration expansion, made possible by moving the students of the West Elementary into the new South Elementary this fall. Call for bids on this remodeling has already al-ready been published. The school board has not stipulated stip-ulated the exact amounts needed need-ed for each of the proposed building build-ing needs, since plans are not far enough advanced to set a definite cost. However, it has been determined that the amount of the bond issue would be sufficient suf-ficient to cover forseeable building build-ing needs of the district People to Decide Time schedule for meeting badly needed educational facilities facili-ties in the school district will be determined by the voice of the taxpayers to be expressed in the bond election on May 22. If the bonds are approved the school board can proceed Immediately with preparation of plans for building needs. If the bond issue is rejected it will be necessary to meet needs as funds become available, school officials point out. Coping with the needs on available fund basis will mean that present high school and Junior high school students will be deprived of educational advantages advan-tages that they are entitled to, the school officials state. |
