Show Post Office Building Construction Under Way With the foundation and floor already laid, the laying of the brick walls foi new post office building for Parowan got under way on Tuesday of this week, according to Karl O. Mitchell, who is constructing the building build-ing for the post office department on a leave-rental basis. Mr. Mitchell is the owner of the present pres-ent quarters occupied by the local lo-cal post olfice, which the department depart-ment has declared inadequate to handle the faster mail schedule inaugurated during the past year, according to Postmaster Howard D. Knight. The new building will be nine feet wider and seven feet deeper and is located on East Center Street facing south on the canyon can-yon highway. It will be of concrete con-crete and brick construction with a driveway down the east side and a loading and unloading dock at the back or north end of the building. Postmaster Knight says there are two reasons for the new building, the first of which is for expediting mail gathering and delivery, uider the plans inaugurated inau-gurated last year in which 95'c of the communities in Utah and some in neighboring states now have 21 hour mail delivery. The new building will allow quicker access to the loading and unloading un-loading dock with the building off of Main Street and an open driveway down the side to the dock. Mr. Knight states that the few minutes saved here and in each postoffice where the mail trucks have to stop will run into a saving of hours over the 24 hour period. TK second reason for the new building will be modernization moderniza-tion of the inside of the office. It will do away with the barred windows and superstructure with the installation of new bank type service counters. It will also introduce a split-type lobby, one for window service and one for post office box patrons. This will make it possible for the service lobby to be locked up but leaving leav-ing the lobby open for box patrons. pat-rons. Postmaster Knight states that it Is completed that the new quarters will be ready for occupancy occu-pancy during August. What Mr. Mitchell has in mind for the old building is not known at this time. The Mountain States Tel. and Tel. Co. uses the rear portion por-tion of the building to house its dial operating equipment and will probably continue to use that portion of the building. |
