Show " 'rS:.:: k. I -j. ,- i;riJ WILLIAM A. CONDIE Bill Condie, Mail Carrier, Retires filter 35 Years Christmas became a time for exchange of bags for Wm. A. Condie of Cedar City. It was an exchange from a mail bag to a golf bag. Due to retire from the Postal Service after nearly 3G years of mtv ice as a carrier, children of .Mr. Condie presented him Saturday Sat-urday morning with a golf bag and clubs to occupy him during his years of retirement. Condie, who begnn his service with the Cedrr City department as a substitute in 1930, will re-lire re-lire from the Postal Department at the completion of service Friday, Fri-day, Dec. 30. 11- begn working with tho department in April of 1930 during dur-ing the depression. For the first month he worked three days as a substitute for an hour each day and received $1.25 per day for his services including the use of his truck. Although still a substitute ho began on a near regular basis been with the department ever the following month and has since receiving a permanent appointment ap-pointment in 1951. Initially he was a substitute carrier and parcel post working in all areas of the city at various var-ious times. For the major portion of his service, however, he worked on the west side of town and for the past five years has been assigned as-signed to the northwest portion of the city. One of tup things that Mr. Condie Con-die will probably miss most but not regret is his various tangles with dogs. He vouches that th perverbual stories about postmen post-men and dogs are true. He recalls re-calls one incident when he delivered de-livered mail on the porch and reached down to pet a dog there. Before he could react the dog. had bitten and torn the llesny portion of his hand. Latter on his route another patron pa-tron assisted him in bandaging, the hand. It was the worst bite, but not the only one he received over the course of 35 years of mail delivery In the city. Condie indicated that he will not be idle during his retirement. He will continue in church and civic capacities including his po-siton po-siton as ward clerk of the Cedar Sixth Ward and as secretary and treasurer of the South and West Irrigation Company. Oh, yes, he hopes to tote his new bag around the golf links when weather wea-ther permits. |
